First college visit

Anonymous
My kids are in elementary school but my nephew, who is a rising junior and top of his class at a small school in Oklahoma, is visiting and I'm taking him to do a campus tour at the SLAC in our city tomorrow. He's excited about this college; his home situation is not great and while he's excelling academically, his high school experience is not providing him a lot of opportunities--no foreign languages, his parents don't support volunteering (mom doesn't drive and they have 6 other kids), there are a few extra curricular activities but nothing that really stands out. . When I applied to college I just went to the better in-state public (free!) and never did any visits elsewhere. Any tips on what to expect or inquire about?

I've got to think an Okie would provide geographical diversity at almost any slac. If he's really interested in this particular school he should as what he should be doing in the next year to be a competitive applicant. Maybe inquire about the benefits if early decision.

Assuming you have made a set appointment and aren't wandering around:Expect an informational meeting from the admission office, highlighting the school's history and academics. Parents and students will be encouraged to ask questions. (Typically, parents ask about the finances and class sizes). Next, there will be a campus tour showing you dorms to classrooms to the recreation facilities. The tours are generally given by an enthusiastic student. The entire thing can last a few hours. My only advice is wear comfortable shoes. Enjoy.
