granola /protein bars - are any low in sugar?

Anonymous
I have started being more careful about reading food labels and boy has it been eye opening. I do not eschew all processed foods but I am ready to eliminate granola bars from my kids' diet primarily because there is so much sugar in them - just call them candy bars! The problem is that they are so darn convenient for an on the go snack. I also do not like seeing soy protein as a top ingredient. And this is even in the "healthy" bars! Can anyone recommend a brand and/or variety that is decently low in sugar and has a relatively simple ingredient list? Thanks.

Kind bars are mostly nuts. Pretty good and not too unhealthy.

I think uber bars use figs and raisins as sweeteners.

Some of the Kashi bars are lower in sugar too.

My whole family likes the Mojo bars--which are low glycemic index (and were recommended to me by a nutritionist).

My health conscious DC likes the Quest bars. They are pricey though - about 2.50 each.

Lara Bars are just fruit and nuts, although some flavors have a little chocolate in them.

So no added sugar; I'm not sure how many grams of sugar are in them from the fruit.

+1 for Quest bars. I think they have the best stats. I like cookie dough, cookies and cream, and double fudge.

As other PPs have mentioned, I (and my kids) like the Kind nut bars, and also the Kashi bars.

Uber bars are made by the same company as Lara (Clif). Lara bars are usually sweetened with dates, and Uber are mostly nuts. The one I have with me is 14g carbohydrates, 8g sugar, 3g fiber. Not a lot of protein but still a good snack if you're watching sugar/carbs.

Op here - I will check these out, thanks. I have found the kashi bars to be high in sugar but will take a second look. Can you buy the other brands in a regular grocery store, or do I need to go to Whole Foods or MOMs?

.

Lara bars are at the regular grocery, but they don't usually have many flavors. Costco sells then too.

We get quest bars at GNC. I've seen them at whole foods on occasion. I need to look into mail ordering them.

My kids love Larabars, and they have a few flavors at Safeway; MOM's and Whole Foods have more. Usually Trader Joe's has a good selection of different brands, and their prices are decent, so you could try several different kinds without having to buy a whole box. If you find a flavor you like and want a whole box, Target often has good prices on them.

Just a comment on any of these bars, even those sweetened with fruit ... They are very sticky and are very prone to giving your kids cavities. I know they are convenient, but perhaps a small baggy with goldfish, wheat thins, sliced apples, carrots, etc could also provide a portable snack.
