How to stop dog from playing chase

Anonymous
Our puppy is now 7 months old. The trainer warned us that he may start acting like a teenager around this time and, he has. His most annoying habit is picking up stuff he's not supposed to while in the yard and running away when you get near him. He knows the command "leave it" and WAS very good at it. Until now. Now, he'll spit out the object and grab it again or hover over it until you get close, then grab it and run. I've tried giving him treats but that has stopped working too since he appears to know that he can hold out. Suggestions??

OP here- I should add that some of the things he grabs (like rocks) are dangerous because he sometimes swallows them and some things (toys) He will chew to pieces, so ignoring him is not an option.

Reinforce "Leave it" and "drop it" with him in sessions of about 10-15 minutes, a few times a week. He's testing you, and you want to ramp up the training in this command.

I read "How to stop dog from playing chess."

It's early.

OK, so my teenager dog has become less-reliable re: house breaking. Hope this is a teenage thing.
