Does anyone know how much, on average, a birth at Sibley Hospital costs? We're trying to determine potential out-of-pocket expenses for our first child's delivery in June. |
It all depends on what your insurance covers. |
I would call your insurance and find out. And remember that you will get a bill not just from the hospital but also from your OB, anesthesia (if you have an epidural), pediatrician etc. |
Agree with all PPs. Also if you opt for a private post-partum room, you would need to pay out of pocket $180/night. Insurance companies won't cover it since Sibley has 2 person rooms, which is what they cover. |
For my doctor, the total cost will be $3800 (which I think includes all of my visits, too) at Sibley. I don't know how much of that will be covered, since she is out of my network. She also told me that they re-did the post-partum areas, and now everyone gets a private room. |
3,800 sounds too low as a total cost. That might be the doctor's fee only. My OB charged the insurance company around 4.5 K (for delivery and prenatal care). The hospital, anesthesia, pediatrician etc were in addition to that (but insurance covered everything 100%). |
I took the Sibley maternity tour two weeks ago, and there were still shared rooms. They told me I'd have to pay $200/ night to get the private room. PP, do you have more recent information? |
They are planning to re do the entire hospital with a new building so that everyone will have private rooms but construction hasn't started yet. |
There are still 4 semi-private rooms at Sibley, so you do have to pay out-of-pocket for the private room. |
When I delivered in June 07, I received a bill for almost 11k for my 4 day hospital stay (had c-section). I only paid my $100 hospital co-pay however. |
Did you share a room then? Or did your insurance somehow cover the private room? |
I delivered in November. My OB statement was $5k for "vaginal delivery". I believe the Sibley bill was an additional $7k? I stayed three nights: one for an induction and then two in post-partum. We paid $400 out of pocket at the hospital for my private room. We are still getting bills here and there for small amounts ($125 or less) from misc. doctors, including pediatrician, anesthesiologist etc. Blue Cross covered the hospital stay and all but $275 of my entire OB cost from conception to birth. I'd say the out of pocket costs were $1000-$1500. Congrats on your baby! |
20:30 here- forgot to mention that we paid the single room supplement- about $500 for three nights (well worth it I might add, after sharing a room the first evening). |
We paid about an extra $200 per night for the private room. TOTALLY worth it. It takes a while for all the bills to straggle in after you get home with the baby, so be ready for that. |
