expunging grades from middle school

Anonymous
Would you advise your child to expunge his/her Algebra or Geometry grades from middle school if s/he got a B or B+? So s/he can start out at a higher GPA in 9th grade?
Anonymous
No. I would consider expunging and retaking a C, but a B is likely not the only B your child will see before the transcript is complete.

I didn't.

How is a 0.0 higher than a 3.0?

Meant to add: if a C, I would encourage DC to retake the class. If above a C, I would say carry on.

Why are you concerned about middle school grades? Only high school grades go to colleges . . .

HS classes taken in MS are on the HS transcript unless the parents expunge the grades. In Fairfax County, many students take math and language classes in MS that count toward HS and meeting the HS graduation requirements. In math, Algebra and above is considered to be a HS course.

no, we've been over this before, and before that - - if the course counts for HS credit, the grade is factored into the GPA to colleges (FCPS anyway)

Same in Arlington. Also, IIRC, 8th grade geography is considered a high school level course and goes on the transcript.

No, I wouldn't expunge.

I mean, if your kid can't get As in these classes without extreme intervention, they aren't exactly going to be competing for a spot in the Ivys. Your kid is slightly above average, expunging grades isn't going to change that.

Assuming the kid usually gets A or A- in all her/his other classes, a B or B+ would drag his gpa down somewhat

Isn't it highly possible that if a kid usually gets As in all other classes that maybe math just isn't their strongest subject and will be a B regardless?

Oh, so that's why everyone is dying to take Algebra in 7th-- so the child can take it again in summer school or 8th? Wouldn't it make more sense to wait until the child is ready?

Not if you tell the school to expunge the grade. Then it's gone and there is no record whatsoever of it on the child's transcript, GPA, etc. We just did this for DC's 8th grade Algebra; grade was a C.
