Night time potty training for deep sleepers...

Anonymous
DS (3yo) has been out of daytime diapers for more than a year and I think we may be ready to start nighttime training. But, we've tried and reverted back to night diapers once before, and I don't want to try this again unless we're pretty sure of success this time around. Advice would be appreciated!

From the previous board posts, it seems that (esp. for boys) they need to be 1) physically able to hold it through the night and/or 2) able to wake up and use a toilet if needs be. The first rule seems to apply, but I don't know if he'll *ever* be able to wake himself up.

A few months ago, he stopped peeing in his diapers 2-3 nights in a row, so we decided to try going diaper-free. The next few nights were disasters - we found him in a puddle several times a night (not awake, mind you -- he's a really deep sleeper) - so we called it quits and reverted to diapers.

For the past week+ DS has been waking up in the morning to a dry diaper, and has asked to stop using them. I'm pretty convinced that DS is physically able to hold it through the night, but I seriously doubt that he could wake up and use a toilet if he had to. Don't want to discourage him. But also want to make sure his chances of success are good.

How bad would it be to try and fail again? Maybe we should we test him by giving him a huge glass of water tonight!

Ideas? Advice?

One piece of advice -- get him up before you turn in for the night and take him to the toilet to go. He probably won't even really fully wake up, but we used to do this when we potty-trained our DS and it worked great. Also limit liquids after dinner, of course.

How long do you have to continue with the waking him up at night and taking him to the potty before you go to bed? It seems once that is started, I wouldn't know when to stop doing that....
