Fruit flies

Hello,

I have a group of fruit flies by the sink that won't go away. I'm familiar with getting rid of them by the trash, and we don't have any there.

I cleaned the sink and there are no dishes and no food out, but the fruit flies remain. What else can I do? Are they maybe attracted to food remnants in the drain?

It's so hot and muggy, and we have no AC in most of the house - that's surely not helping.

Try the old vinegar and Dawn (half and half roughly) in a bowl covered with Saran wrap, poked with holes, trick. Do you have a disposal? Run some clean water and/or ice chips through it to be sure nothing's hanging out in there.

No disposal. Thanks. I was doing a wine / dawn mixture without Saran Wrap. Not sure how good it was

Ours are very picky about what type of vinegar they like. Ours like Sherry vinegar, not apple cider or white or rice. You may need to experiment. Just put a little in a dish.

They are welcome to survive anywhere they'd like except for in my apartment. Unless they'd like to contribute to the rent

Apple cider vinegar, some fruit juice and dawn...fill plastic bottle caps to the brim with it and leave it around where they are found. They will drown in it.

Even with the wine - add some fruit juice in it.

I had a bad infestation last year and finally got rid of them by burning incense. Their little fruit fly lungs can't handle the smoke.

We're using those sticky tapes that spiral down. We have flies in the garage. I have no idea why - just seem especially bad this year, perhaps due to cold winter. The tapes do an excellent job.

Drink a bottle of red wine. Leave the last few drops in the bottle (no sucking out the dregs )

Pour a little red balsamic vinegar into the bottle.

Stick a funnel into the bottle.

Wrap where the funnel meets the bottle with saran wrap or glad press and seal

Set it on your counter.

The fruit flies will fly in, get stuck and die in the balsamic vinegar.

A few days later throw out the bottle. All the flies should be gone.

check your house plants.

They can live up inside the overflow holes.

I had this problem a few years ago and what finally got rid of them was boiling hot water. Pour boiling water down all of the sinks and drains in your house. Do this several times and you'll get rid of them.
