I'm starting to list the schools I'll be touring/applying to in the fall. What are some of the differences between the kids that McLean serves and those who go to Lab? McLean's website says that it works with kids with mild to moderate learning disabilities as well as "traditional" learners. I know that everyone at Lab will have learning disabilities, but are those LDs more significant than the kids at McLean?
Other differences I should think about? DC has ADHD and dyslexia; looking at mid to upper elementary school. |
| Apply to several as admissions are frequently scarce, especially the summer before enrollment. |
I'm not looking to apply now; I'll be touring schools in the fall, and then applying to enroll for 2015-16. |

If your child has more than moderate dyslexia, Mclean will not be a good option for you.
YOu might want to look at Siena and Kingsbury for schoosl that handle more severe learning issues. |
| To answer your original question -- yes, I think the learning disabilities at Lab are likely to be more significant than at McLean |
| I have two kids at McLean MS with ADHD and ADD, respectively, and mild language based disability (expressive and receptive) and decoding and perhaps mild dysgraphia although it was ruled out. McLean has worked very well for both and neither has difficulty accessing the curriculum. The small learning environment and individualized instruction have been essential to the progress they have made at McLean versus the public school they were previously in. |
| My advice would be to visit both schools. You have nothing to lose but your time. IMO, you really can't get a sense if a school is for your kid unless you look at it yourself. |
| I agree. I am the 12:55 PP. There is no way I would have applied to any school without visiting and I visited Lab and McLean. Both schools are excellent but I thought McLean would be a better fit for my kids. |

I think the answer is yes and no. For example, not all the kids at Lab will have dyslexia and the severity differs among kids for those who do.
I would definitely say tour McLean, Lab and agree with PP about adding Siena and Kingsbury. I think there all good choices for the issues you mention although technically McLean is the only school that's not specifically SN. |
