Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
I'm interested in signing up for an infant swim class with my 8 month old--does anyone have any recommendations for Montgomery County classes--Bethesda, Takoma Park, Silver Spring?
have you checked out the county's swim lessons for infants? You may have to wait for spring session to start.

i know you didn't ask me this question...but i signed up for swim classes when my kids were 8 months. i paid and everything and only went to one class:
- 1. oprah had a special where a child died from inhaling water. babies don't know any better. it poses a huge risk. - 2. ear infections. babies ears don't drain the way older children's do. the babies who stayed in swim class had earaches thereafter for several months and then had to get tubes. sorry, i debated on whether to write. i thought i should - mostly because i'd want to know. |
We did water baby classes through MoCo from about 6 mos- 18 mos. and I don't think DS's head was underwater once that entire time (or maybe once towards the end, and we realized it was not popular with him). Now maybe you are only going to get your child used to the idea of having his/her head under water, but don't let the PP scare you off, because you can certainly have a lot of fun doing it without having the baby's head under water. (On the other hand, don't expect it to be a true "swim class" either-- it's basically a chance for you and your baby to hang out in the water.)
Gaithersburg indoor swim center has a nice little program for infants over 6 months I think. It's $50 a class. Basically just to get your child used to being in the water. My DC really enjoyed it at 20 months. The one baby who was about 12 months didn't seem too enthused.
