I accepted a position at Overlook Elementary. They did have an open house and the principal and director of the foriegn language programs for the entire county are very excited about this upcoming school year. The kids will be using Ipads starting in kindergarten as teaching aids. The director for the county says that she has been fighting for this program for 14 years as she is from Spanish heritage herself. She just returned prior to the meeting from multiple spanish speaking countries(Mexicao, Spain etc..) recruiting teachers as they will all be native speakers. She seems very excited, which got me excited for the program as I was on the fence at first. She also answered some questions given our designated schools. There will be no English spoken in the classrooms starting on day 1. The comprehensive students will over time be transitioned out and each school will be all spanish immersion. After elementary school they have a plan for one spanish immersion middle school where the kids from the 3 schools will filter into. They will also introduce a 3rd language in the older grades and the schools will choos which one they will offer. A little concerned that they don't teach English until 2nd grade but she assurred us that this would not be an issue when testing comes around. Pointed out thet the French immersion schools have some of the best reading scores in the county, but me being the worried parent I have set up for my son to have English lesons 3 days a week to keep him on tract in case I find this is not the right fir for him.
