Tipping the counselors

Anonymous
Lots of sleepaway discussion this morning so I'll throw my question out there. My kid is a week week camp with no visiting day. She's on the bus both ways. How do I get the tip to her counselors? I don't want to send cash or an activated Visa card through the mail.

Are you supposed to tip counselors?

OP here-- my kid is at a four week camp, not a week week camp. It's my understanding that unless explicitly stated that there is a no tipping policy, tipping the counselors at sleepaway camp is the norm.

Does your sleepaway camp have a no tipping policy?

We sent DS to sleep-away camp last summer and plan to repeat this summer. We didn't tip the counselors.

OP,

This is an example of the insidious dangers of tipping - you end up feeling obligated to monetarily reward everyone who renders you a service. The upper middle class can afford to, and some are so disconnected from reality that they pity anyone working for a stipend/minimum wage, even the young college students.

A heartfelt thank you is quite enough.

Ours has a strict No tipping policy. They instead suggest making a donation to their camp scholarship fund in the name of the counselor you wish to recognize. A lot of parents will arrive on pick-up day with baked goods which the counselors really love.

You do not tip counselors. At every camp my children have attended that is not allowed and would be considered highly inappropriate (borderline insulting as well).

Our camp alliows tipping. Our child goes for 4 weeks snd we tip each counselor $50. This is a sleepawsy csmp in the poconos.

I do not know if it is logistically possible to tip....the kids are not to bring money, and take a bus to and from the camp...I will not meet the counselors.

I've never heard of this. Oh brother. More hidden/expected charges - does it ever end? When we were kids were our moms expected to bring all our teachers gift certificates and our counselor tips and all this other stuff? Or is this a new phenomenon/a DC thing?
