Toddler and Persistent Night Time Cough

Anonymous
My DS has a virus at Christmas time and has since recovered. The temp and all other symptoms are gone except for a persistent cough that only rears its head at night and sometimes in the early morning. It is not wheezing nor does he have any shortness of breath or anything like that, but if he wakes at night because he hears his sister get up or something, he will start coughing and continue for some time. I have tried giving him water, elevating him, and he has a cold mist humidifier, but it lingers. Anyone else have this experience? Should I just get used to the fact that a cough may be par for the course during the winter months?

Thanks.

Have you been to the doc? Sometimes ear infections present this way, because when the kiddo lays down, all the mucous drains to the throat.

If it was RSV, my DC had something similar for about a month afterward.

But it seems it could also be post nasal drip caused by allergies.

Try giving him a spoon or two of honey mixed with lemon juice. It worked wonders from DD, her cough got better over night and started to sleep through the night again two days later.

Is it ok to give a child honey? How old is OP's son?

You should take your child to the dr. We had this situation a few weeks ago and they gave my child an inhaler and it has really helped.

different poster here, but same issues with my 10 month old. my mil, my neighbor, my playgroup all commented that he might have the croup so i call my pedi and they basically blow me off that it's a cold because i'm not taking his temp everyday to deem it otherwise, and that i'm not doing a good enough job describing the cough.

i'm not a doctor and if he's otherwise happy, i'm not going to stick a thermometer up his bum just to double check he doesn't have a fever. sorry to hijack the thread, but i had to vent about my situation. i hope you're baby is feeling better. i had to push my way into an appointment.

check with your doctor. could be allergies or persistent congestion. could also be asthma...night time cough is a tell tale sign. asthma symptoms can be triggered by allergies or infection and can drag on.

OP here, I appreciate all of the feedback. Have a docs appt today, so we will see what this is! Thanks so much. Hope it's not asthma. Lord.

PP; Even if he has asthma symptoms doesn't mean he has asthma. Alot of kids have symptoms when they are little and outgrow them. They don't even diagnose it really until they are older.
