Retirement or real estate ?

Which is the better investment financially...,

1) $ in IRA

or

2) upgrading to a more expensive and desirable neighborhood (schools and location are high quality here but would be much better in new area)

Impossible to compare analytically with any meaningful certaintity. Only comment I'd make is one is relatively more illiquid than the other.

Also it depends on where the real estate is.

It sounds like you are talking about primary residence not rental property. I vote real estate/house. You'll get much more enjoyment from living in a better house in a better location than you will from retirement savings.
