Timber Lane/Jackson/Falls Church

Would love feedback from parents with kids in this school triangle. My child is not school aged yet, but we are looking at houses in Greenway Downs, which feeds into Timber Lane and Falls Church high school. DH and I both grew up going to small highly rated public schools in other parts of the country (both of us had high school classes of about 200 people), but (a) close-in northern virginia schools are big and crowded and (b) we chose career paths that don't allow us to afford houses in the highly rated school districts here, so this is really uncharted territory for us. We'd love to hear your experiences in these schools - particularly Timber Lane elementary.

I don't know much about Timber Lane, but Falls Church HS should be avoided. It has one of the highest truancy rates in all of FFX.

In the recent FCPS teacher surveys, Falls Church was second only to McLean HS among high schools in terms of overall teacher satisfaction with working at the school. FCHS has a new principal who appears to be doing a great job.

I've seen the fcps working conditions survey, but where can I find the schools rankings in comparison to one another?

Falls Church is a fine school. I'm a student there btw (so I'm a DC Suburban student!). I say this all the time -- all FCPS schools are good. Falls Church definitely isn't a bad school, even by FCPS standards. This is coming from a kid who went the Mantua AAP - Jackson AAP - Falls Church route, knowing 90% of my peers went to "better" schools, such as WT Woodson, McLean, Madison, Oakton, Marshall, and especially TJ.

If you are going to rough it out at timeber lane the end goal should be the McLean zone not falls church.

My kid goes to timber lane and I think it's a wonderful school. What is there exactly to 'rough it out?' The only people commenting here are ones that have personal experience with the schools that are mentioned. Greenway downs is zoned for falls church high and not mclean.

OP, the problem some people have with timber lane is that there is a high level of ESOL students and free/reduced meals students. Personally , I could care less about all of that, but that is the reality of the school. My child had a wonderful teacher and very nice children in her class. The front office staff and admin are all very welcoming and helpful.

Falls Church High School is supposed to get renovated soon.

Currently, it looks like the physical renovations wouldn't start any earlier than 2019 or 2020. The School Board asked FCPS Staff to consider whether the renovations could be accelerated. Staff has come back and suggested that they could be moved up to 2017, but that it would delay renovations at other schools. It seems like FCPS Staff is trying to tell the School Board to leave the current renovation schedule in place.

I live in Greenway Downs and my son is not yet in school but my neighbors all love Timberlane. I like that FCHS is a bit smaller than some of the other high schools in the area and I am assuming by the time my son is high school aged it will of been updated a bit. Greenway Downs is a great neighborhood by the way!
