Seriously, I just want to shake her sometimes. WTF is this? I haven't even heard of this diet until now. She was supposed to eat ONLY apples for five days. She got so dizzy she almost passed out and feels like shit. I don't even know the exact reasons why this type of diet is incredibly dangerous and stupid other than your body obviously needs more diverse nutrients than whatever is in apples, for Pete's sake. And she definitely won't lose weight, and will end up in even worse shape than before, because she is always trying these crazy fad diets and that's what always happens. Ughh. There is only one way to lose weight, and it is hard, and it is hard to maintain.

I didn't know this 'diet' was still around. I know some people who tried it almost 2 decades ago, but that was a crash diet to lose weight before a wedding.
It's just as silly as the lemon juice-maple syrup-cayenne pepper thing. |
that second works for a lot of people |
| master cleanse works. |
| I still love my cabbage soup diet, but I usually only eat that after vacation. |
| Well, it's frustrating because her health is quite poor to start with... she has all kinds of weird allergies, and she's very overweight, and it's pretty clear an all apple diet is the last thing she needs. |

Yup, we need more science education in schools. Although you can't fix stupid. |
| I wouldn't criticize her. You know how hard it is to lose weight OP. She needs your help, not your superior attitude. We can all make diets out of anything. There's no magic pill. Eating an apple a day is like a fast that many religions favor. Mind your own business. |

I've had a crappy day, and OP just so you know the thread title made me laugh. So thank you.
but seriously, yes, that sucks. No diet should make you so dizzy you almost pass out. My general advice with bad diets is to give the whole thing as little attention as possible. She's hopefully more desperate (in which case be supportive of more healthy dieting ideas when she tries those) but anyone who creates drama about their diet with such ridiculous should not be remotely encouraged. And hope SIL isn't always this crazy! |
Eating disorders masked as "diets. " stupid is right. |
For your information, I did not ask or say anything regarding this silliness, she's the one who was complaining to us about her father eating in front of her and trying to encourage her to eat regular food while she was on her "diet." And how do you think we found out that she's on the verge of passing out all day? She was complaining about it!! The only thing I said to her is "Your diet requires WHAT??" and "Umm, this does not sound terribly healthy." Believe me, SIL is no meek, wilting flower or whatever. She is VERY opinionated, and she can more than hold her own against anyone. I actually feel really bad for her, her life has been spinning out of control lately. I think the diet is an attempt to take control of something, but it's completely the wrong way to go about it. |
| This makes me sad for her. She is obviously desperate and doesn't seem to know better. |
|
it's the whole dieting thing in general that drives me batty,
unless you have extraordinary will power, it's small changes, and very small changes, over time that will do the trick. Any extreme diet just makes you yo-yo |
No, it doesn't. |
I tried it. And nothing happened. Nothing. |
