Buying Honda Odyssey -- now or wait until September/October

Anonymous
We're looking to buy a new Honda Odyssey -- would REALLY like to have it for a couple trips before the end of the summer, but it's not absolutely necessary right now. We're expecting a second in November, and the minivan will be necessary (by our definition) at that time. Am wondering if the savings will be substantial enough to wait for deals around Labor Day. In particular, I'm not sure when the new model year will come out -- if there's any chance it will be rolled out in the fall, then I expect we may be able to get a very good deal on a 2014 sometime in Sept. or Oct. -- any thoughts??

I have found that getting a internet quotes before heading to the dealership makes much more of a difference than what time of year you buy.

wait until the end of the month- when they are trying to up their numbers. As it's june, it's also the end of the fiscal quarter -- a perfect time to buy a 2014.

And use the internet and email to get many competing bids. Wait until you get down to the point where the dealerships won't go lower.

Thanks! We've been used True Car and have been getting internet quotes. Definitely plan on bargaining. I was just wondering if it might be worthwhile to wait even a bit longer for a better deal. But it sounds like this month is as good a time as any (if not better!).

We just bought one, and after we bought it (so he wasn't in the process of pressuring or anything), our salesperson told us that they are doing some new things to the Odyssey, and the price is going up significantly with the model year 2015. With that being said, I would probably buy sooner rather than later.

I agree with buying at the end of the month, preferably before the 2014s are gone. If price is a concern. Usually the summer is a good time. When my DH bought his car, they ran out of model year 2010s in August.

Interesting -- thanks! We have a number of quotes, and one which is very competitive. Planning to go out and drive this weekend, and will likely buy this month.

Nothing is going to change in the Ody until the redesign for the 2017 model (out late 2016.) The 2015 will be identical to the 2014. It will not be any cheaper in September.

We bought a Honda (different model, the Fit) at the end of last September and honestly felt like we walked away with an amazing deal - not a feeling we expected in purchasing a car! The new models were just set to arrive at the beginning of October so dealerships were eager to get rid of the 2013 models and meet their monthly/quarterly sales goals. We were able to negotiate the price beyond what we expected and have them throw in servicing.

If you are able to wait, I would suggest you do so and get specific quotes from dealers.

If you're eager to have the new car in time for summer trips, then I'm sure you will be able to find a decent deal at the end of the month. But our experience was mid- to late-September at the Honda dealerships was a time where we had a lot of negotiating power.

Very helpful, thank you!

We got our 2014 odyssey last year in last July/early August so I'd expect that's when the 2015 will come out.

Our best offer came by an internet inquiry from the same dealership we ended up buying from. We walked in and they gave us a quote that they said was unbeatable. The next day we went back into our email and found a lower quote - by email - from the same dealership. So obviously they had to honor it and beat their own "amazing deal." We went to 3 different dealerships to get the best price/trade-in value.

End of the month is always better than the beginning of the month.

You should go on Edmunds.com and read about buying a new car. (there was an article written by an Edmund's employee who went undercover at two or three different dealerships. We read it and purchased 2 brand new vehicles and the article helped a LOT.

I oversee more than 3000 dealerships nationwide. The slow time is actually February. December is usually a huge month, despite common wisdom - there are a lot of business sales then. My advice is get internet quotes, agree to take their financing offer, and shop after the new year.

Don't wait too long. We tried to buy the previous year in October 2013 (trying for a 2012) and they were all sold out. They were not giving any great bargains at that point, since there were few left.
