Where is that Ivy alum who posts on every thread that she could never find qualified Banneker students to recommend?
Congrats to all the students. |
| ...and Cap Hill and wotp parents continue pretending that Banneker doesn't exist. |
| And yes, congrats to both students and their families. |

One-hundred percent college attendance to some very impressive schools. I do wish the city would renovate that dump of a building the school is currently housed.
Maybe DCPS can give Banneker one of the new under-enrolled renovated gems. |
| There's a DC parent who has five children.... her first son attends Harvard and won Gates scholarship (full ride) her second son full-ride to Adelphi University in New York, her third child, daughter...full-ride to Yale and fourth and fifth are at Burrville but will be home-school until they reach high-school age. By their income they are considered FARMS. |
| Is this Gates scholarship only awarded to low income teens? I've never heard of anyone winning one in my neck of the woods (those these teens win all manner of things, like NMSF, Jefferson, Intel semi finals, etc). |
Green with envy? |

It's a fair point. Low SES DC public school kids aren't held to the same Ivy standards as upper middle-income kids. For good reason perhaps but it is what it is for high SES families.

She's here and she wishes that she'd had the chance to interview that kid. The odd ultra-resourceful, disciplined and brilliant DC public school student does have a shot. Congrats to these two students. |

Thanks for the above 2 comments! Just the incentive those kids need for you both to eat your words in four years! Haters! Wow!
Congrats kids! |
The point is not fair. Yours is the typical American ethnic majority response. Any time a non-white works hard, studies harder, and scores equally as well on the standardized test of choice (ACT or SAT) as white students, and gets accepted to an ivy league school or earns a scholarship, it is because the standards are lowered. Obviously, you are of the mindset that some white child is displaced any time a Black or Latino student gets accepted into a university. Since you've decided to bring up the issue of standards. All students in DCPS, whether high SES (code for white) or low SES (code for non-white) have to take the DC CAS. In order to be accepted at Banneker, students must score proficient or advanced. Students at Banneker are enrolled in one of two programs upon admission, International Baccalaureate or Advanced Placement. Bottom line is this, no DCPS or DCPCS High School has higher test scores, higher graduation rates, higher college acceptance rates, or higher academic standards than Benjamin Banneker Academic High School. My suggestion to you and others of your similar ignorant mindset is to eliminate your false sense of self and accept the fact that high SES (white) are not necessarily God's gift to the world. |
| Banneker and Brown alum here, I'm so happy for these kids. Both have bright futures ahead of them. |
Google is your friend - use it. The criteria for Gate is public information. I have taken the liberty to reproduce it below for you: "Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they meet all of the following criteria: - Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian & Pacific Islander American** or Hispanic American - Are a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States - Have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted 4.0 scale or have earned a GED - Will enroll for the first time at a U.S. located, accredited*** college or university (with the exception of students concurrently pursuing a high school diploma) in the fall of 2014 as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student. First-time college enrollees can also be GED recipients. - Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities - Meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria - Have completed and submitted all three required forms: the student's application (Nominee Personal Information Form), an evaluation of the student's academic record (Nominator Form) and an evaluation of the student's community service and leadership activities (Recommender Form) by the deadline" |
