I run with my off-leash dogs

Anonymous
I just wanted to tell you guys about my off-leash habits from my perspective. I have three border collies, aged 9 yrs, 4 yrs, and 2 yrs. They could care less about people or other dogs... they are only concerned with me, tennis balls, frisbees, and agility equipment. When I jog through our neighborhood, they follow along off-leash. One usually runs at my left side while the other two run a few feet behind on my right side. Why do I not have them on leash? Well, because I don't want to have to juggle three leashes going off in two directions... especially since they sometimes switch positions.

In all of their years with me, they have never ever left my sides/heels while I am out jogging. They know their job. If we are approaching another person on the sidewalk, I generally scoot off into the road for a few paces until I pass. My dogs just follow right along.

So why the big fuss about running with them off-leash? I suppose there is a very small chance that one day, one of them might run off somewhere inappropriate. But, you know what? There is probably a greater chance that a leashed dog will pull the leash out of their owner's hand (or slip/break their collar) and run off somewhere inappropriate.

Yes, I know it is against the law. But I feel like it is kind of like going 26 mph in a 25 mph zone. So aside from the legality, what is the problem with this exactly? How am I hurting/annoying anyone?

Rock on.

Yeah, you're right ... laws are just made to annoy you.

Anyway, I'm sure the police will be very understanding of you since you are special and don't need to follow the laws.

That's right snowflake, you keep being the special unique you that's your dog-given right.

Just hope that the one time your dogs go someplace inappropriate it isn't in the general direction of me. I spray first and ask questions later, if I bother to stop.

While it sounds very innocuous, this is one of those situations where I have to suggest: Rock on, but do it on your own land or somewhere outside of the city (somewhere you're not likely to run into other people & dogs running, somewhere you're not likely to get involved in any incidents).

Hi Guys! I like to walk around punching people in the face. Yeah, I know it's illegal, but I feel like...as long as I'm ok, why should I really care?

Just pick and choose the laws you follow.

OP, why would you post this here?

You're not going to get a reasonable response.

I seriously doubt that one of your border collies would bite someone. They are sweethearts. One of the loons around here might hurt your dog, though.

The problem is OBVIOUS:

While I am perfectly ready to believe your dogs are well-behaved, there are other, irresponsible dog-owners are looking at you and thinking: "why don't I do this too?". And their dogs are ill-trained horrors who will run up to other dogs and stress them out, or jump/slobber on people, or worse.

See?

Why should the rest of us have to worry if your off the leash dog is going to jump on us, etc. Yes your dogs may be truly well behaved but many of the off the leash dogs come over and sniff crotches, knock over babies, etc.

I drive 35 when the speed limit is 30 ... Wow I feel better getting that off my chest.

Sometimes I only make a rolling stop before turning right…I know it reflect poorly on my upbringing.
