| My parents are self-employed and have been paying $650/month for what I consider to be a fairly high deductible plan. I think the deductible is $3,000. They just received notice that their monthly cost will spike to $1050 this upcoming renewal period for the same plan. Through the ACA marketplace, they're being quoted $1,200. I've encouraged them to get a few quotes from other insurers, but not sure what a typical premium should be, since I've only ever had experience with employee-sponsored plans. |
| Mine is $825/month for a high deductible plan for a family of 4. It's Maryland high risk plan that preceded ACA but will end at the end of this year so we will have to switch to an ACA plan. I have not looked into the costs of those yet. |
Welcome to the side affects of Obamacare! The hard working middle class gets socked! My families healthcare costs (premiums and out of pocket payments) have risen nearly 5000% since he took office. |
| $750 for a family of 5, $2000 deductible - CareFirst ACA silver plan. I'm self employed. |
| $1100 ACA plan for a family of 3, no deductible. Very happy with it. Was paying the same before ACA, but had an average deductible. |
Same here. Agree with the PP about the middle class getting killed with this. |

Posters should say the state where they live, because it really matters ("the pool").
I live in the District, I pay $625 for one adult and kids and get an HMO with carefirst. The plan was grandfathered once ACA took effect and will no longer exist come December 1. |
| Thanks, all. OP here and just wanted to add that my parents are in VA. It sounds like their quote isn't too far off considering their ages (60). The increase from one plan year to the next is shocking though! |
| I didn't buy insurance because I simply can't afford it. I was getting quotes aroun $300 for a high deductible. I don't have a spare $300 a month laying around especially since I'd still have to pay for my actual healthcare on top of it since the deductible is so high and I never come anywhere even remotely close to spending that much in a year. Plus co-pays on top of all that. So basically I'd be flushing $300 a month down the toilet and still have to pay out of pocket when I do need to see a doctor. The only people who benefit from this are people w/ chronic illnesses. Healthy people loose big time. I've hated this program from the beginning and seriously resent the government forcing me to buy a useless product from a for profit company. They should have regulated insurance companies instead...forced them to become non profit, forced them to accept anyone, forced them to have a sliding scale, forced them to choose whether people have a deductible OR monthly premiums OR co-pays. You shouldn't have to pay all three. It's ridiculous and I won't participate. |
| We pay $2500 per month with out of pocket of up to $10000. We are in md. Carefirst ppo. |
This is in DC - CareFirst PPO |
But what if you're suddenly not a healthy person anymore? I was diagnosed with cancer at 40 and would have literally had to pay more than $1 million for my surgery and treatment without health insurance. I had rarely used my health insurance before that. |
