A couple of years ago there was a thread asking why Stoddert, a fantastic school, was considered a notch below JKLM. It seems like the reason was the combination of two factors: a) cohort / ses diversity (partly explained by the type of housing stock vis-a-vis wealthier upper nwdc); and b) Hardy. For example, Key feeds to Hardy but has a higher share of high ses. Or Murch is as diverse as Stoddert, but feeds into Deal. Interesting, Stoddert is now ranked above Murch, fwiw.
Now, if Hardy becomes as good as Deal, then the "disadvantage" posited by "b)" above will disappear. If Stoddert is already at or above Murch, then Hardy becoming as good as Deal will definitely make it be at the same league as JKLM -- which might make Glover Park an even more desirable neighborhood than it already is. I am aware that these taxonomy is arbitrary and, to some degree, absurd, but I am just curious if we should already be talking about JKLMMS already -- for what it's worth. |
| sounds like you very much buy into the taxonomy. |
| The "kind of housing stock?" Do you seriously believe that the experience of a child growing up in a $800K rowhouse in Glover Park is substantively different from that of a child growing up in a $900K single family home in Chevy Chase? |
Not any more than the seemingly large number of people that refer to JKLM as a useful classification in this forum. |
I was mainly referring to apartment buildings. |
Actually many of the Glover Park rowhouses are going for 900K + now. |
| This simply cannot happen because S is not adjacent to M in the alphabet. In order to include Stoddert, you must first include Oyster-Adams, Powell, and Ross, first making any needed academic improvements at those schools, and then you're still stuck until you identify schools starting with N and Q. Only then can Stoddert be considered equal in stature to the JKLM schools. |
OP here,
|
| Oh for God's sake! There are people starving in the world and major civil unrest in Iraq and we're worried about school ranking?!! |
| The Op has way too much time on their hands if this is what they are spending their time on. |
As a Stoddert parent, I could not agree more. What a dumb and irrelevent question by OP. I'm thrilled with Stoddert, and happy to read so much good news about Hardy. How and why a bunch of anonymous know-nothings on DCUM rank Stoddert doesn't make a bit of difference for the education my kid gets there. |
While many of the SFHs -- if which there are zero in GP -- go for two times that in the Murch neighborhoods of CCDC and forest hills. That's the point. |
| *of* which there are zero ... |
I hope we're friends.
|
and you're spending your time criticizing them, so I guess your time is not so valuable either. (mine neither, but I admit it!) |
