4th grader going for math classes to 6th grade

I know a few kids who go to 6th grade for their math classes even when they are in 4th or 3rd grade. Who decides that? What are the criterias?

We have about a half dozen in my childs grade that does this.

It started with more but after the first two years it got smaller.

I don't know the criteria, but knowing those kids, they are absolutley brilliant math whizzes and passionately love math.

The ones that peeled off were not as self motivated in math as the ones who did it all through.

My kid, who is no slouch in math, calls several of them the human calculator.

There is no question to anyone how smart these few are at math.
