Travel Discussion
In my ongoing effort to downsize my family's spending while improving our family time, I was thinking about whether camping might be something to consider. Before kids, I did a lot of camping. But, somehow now I feel vulnerable about having my kids sleep outside with us in a tent in a state park or campgrounds. Am I being paranoid or are there legitimate risks to the safety of my kids? If it matters, our family has two moms.

I don't see any inherent risks. If your child(ren) have allergies to bug bites, that would about the biggest thing. I used to do a lot of camping growing up. Haven't done it in years. Am waiting until DC is about 4 or 5 to go tent camping, but I'm really looking forward to it.
I don't think there's any risk at all. We prefer camping cabins, though. The Maryland state parks have camper cabins for about $50 per night (only slightly more than a campsite) and we find them much more comfortable than tent camping. You still get the same 'camping feeling' with a picnic table and fire ring. They are on the regular campground loops, so you are sharing the outdoors with tent campers and RV's. They are very basic, single-room building with a double bed and a set of bunk beds, but they have walls, a roof, a small front porchm and a front door with a lock. They also have electricity, so you can bring a fan or a space heater, depending on the weather, along with a coffee maker from home.
Can I ask a dumb question? What do you do when tent camping, if a thunder storm occurs? Are tents relatively safe from lightning?

Answer to the raining while camping in a tent question...the way to sty dry is to do the following:
-put tent & rainfly up at home prior to the trip & apply "seam sealer" (find at any camping store or camping section of other stores) to all the seams. -when putting tent up at campsite, pull rainfly out as far as you can w/stakes -DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING INSIDE YOUR TENT (SLEEPING BAGS, GEAR, ETC) TOUCH THE EDGES OF THE TENT OR THEY WILL GET WET |
