Help! I don't know where to start.
I am in my late 30s and finally have my youngest sleeping through the night so the bags may slowly fade. I have put "me" on the back burner for the last 2 years and I do not have the time or $$ for it to be front and center but I need to make some changes. I just get paralyzed on this topic and therefore do nothing. I was thinking that a good haircut would be the right place to start. I have never been that into hair/make-up as I was a jock though HS and college and just pulled my long straight hair back into a ponytail. This does not cut it. But I don't have lots of time to spend each morning doing my hair either as I am getting the kids ready before I run off to the office myself. I need a professional who would be able to listen to my non-industry terms (layers/flat irons/hair products are not my lingo) and help me. I live in NW DC and I am willing to travel for the right relationship. Any advice - also on websites to check out would be greatly appreciated! |
Amanda at Cabellero at the Columbia Mall is excellent at giving trendy yet low-maintenance cuts. A bit far out to travel, but you asked. I've been searching all around the DC metro area for someone as good, and haven't found one yet. She charges about $60 a cut.

Kathy Perez at Perez Salon in Chevy Chase is great! I think cuts are $75, not sure because I do color at the same time. With makeup, I'm clueless like you. Look in magazines (not necessarily hair ones) for looks you like so you can bring them instead of having to discuss layers etc. |
For a great haircut and color -- Dena at de-la-ines in CC Circle. A good listener, but she'll speak up with her opinion if she thinks you're off-base. My cut is contemporary without being too wild for DC, and very low-maintenance. 202.362.4280. |
When I did my mommy reentering the real world makeover (clothes, hair, makeup, etc.) I used Lana Orloff. www.lanaorloffstyle.com.
She is well worth what she charges for her time, but you should be very up front about your budget and make sure she can work within it. After she helped me replace literally all of my clothes, I now use her every few months or once a season to fill in new pieces (when they are on sale). |
