| Question, is all year round swimming focused on competition? We have done swim lessons in the past, but nothing consistent. My kids joined swim team this summer and seem to like it so far. DH and I would like them to swim year round (minus the competition unless one or both voice an interest in it) as a way of getting some exercise since they won't join any type of team sport. How far advanced do lessons go? Do we need to do more stroke clinic classes? I've heard of Finns, but not really sure if it's geared towards competition from the website. Also, what about something at a montgomery county aquatics center (any of them)? |
| My kids did the developmental stroke program run by Sea Devils Swimming (SDS). I thought they learned alot through that program and improved their strokes tremendously. They used to do year round swimming but as they got older they wanted to play other sports during the year. |

How old are your kids?
Stroke clinic once or twice a week might be sufficient for this winter. If they want more (like meets and more practice), then maybe next winter they can join a team. Team is much more expensive, so you might want to ease into it and ensure they really want to do it. |
| In Arlington, they have two levels with the AAC - pre-competition groups (mini-gators and Gators) and Competition groups (Age Group Prep). My son did the mini-gators program last year and participated in 2 of 5 meets. He could take or leave the meets, but seemed to enjoy the lessons. |
| The JCC Rockville has a non competitive swim team. Kids swim either 2,3 or 4 days per week for an hour. The focus is on stroke development and endurance. It's perfect for the kid that is looking to use swimming as a form of exercise. |
| Fins is the program for you. they a few options in the amount of days you an go per week and it is low key. |
| My son just finished Fins. Had a blast. He didn't want a "winning and losing thing." |
Like this too. Swimming should be for enjoyment and endurance comes with practice. |
| I recommend fins as well. |
