One interesting item we heard was the kid in question had their tonsils out and is now behaving much better. I am hopeful that now the kid is on a much better trajectory. It sounds like they are getting the medical care needed.

Many people in the community and school seem to reacting positively and earnestly to this situation. I am hopeful we are seeing a positive trend.

It’s not ok to shame or out kids here.

You're out of line OP.

I get that this is a tricky topic but I don't see how OP was out of line? Did I miss something?

We're not zoned for SCES, but I personally know two former SCES kindergarteners whose parents pulled them this year.

Because it was a troll post. The last "update" from the OP made that clear.

If only

Stop trolling the people gullible enough to believe this story.

Not OP but as a member of the community it is really frustrating to see this very real situation dismissed and denied. I know a child who was seriously hurt at the school this year. It seems pretty obvious from the thread that multiple posters corroborated the basic story. (No knowledge of OP’s most recent update.)

I don't deny there are real problems. But this story isn't one of them. Surely you know that given where the thread has gone. It is a disservice to the cause to make up or perpetuate obviously false stories.

Apart from the tonsils update, I have personal knowledge of many of the anecdotes on this thread (the water bottle being thrown at the para who needed stitches, kids getting concussion, a K teacher quitting on the spot). So no, I’m sorry to say this isn’t a fake.

That changes everthing. I'm sure "Anonymous" would never lie to promote their cause.

Fair enough but who are you to deny this happened if you aren’t a member of the community?

Who are you to say it did?

A person who lives in the neighborhood who knows a child who was injured. You may not believe me and that’s fine but you don’t know what you are talking about.

I’m a parent at this school (and a room parent to boot, though not in K), and I’ve not heard about any of these incidents. I’m not saying they didn’t happen, just that I’ve not heard of them. I’ve heard of other incidents and know that the staff and principal quickly did their best to address them. I’m glad to hear that these have also been resolved.

Right. There's no reason to believe anonymous and unverified posts on the Internet.

Well, it seems like it’s still happening. There were three police cruisers in front of Sligo Creek elementary and four to five officers in the building. I heard from another parent, whose child text them, that another child brought a knife to school. The principal put out an email stating that no one was harmed, and there was no intention to inflict harm on anyone. So, why bring a knife to school? And what about the trauma for the students and their teacher? Let’s keep it real here, children are showing up to school with weapons to hurt staff and students all over the country.

Oof. We accepted an immersion spot and I feel like it was the right choice and that this could happen anywhere in MCPS, but I do kind of wonder.

(And fwiw I'm getting my info off dcum, although I hadn't heard about this latest.)

To be clear (I got the email as well), the knife was a steak knife and the principal said it was not brought with any intention to do harm. To me, that sounds like a kid who put a steak knife in their lunchbox for a dumb kid reason like cutting a sandwich.

Agreed with the above take (I'm also a parent at the school and received the email). MCPS process and procedure mandates that they notify police, hence the cruisers and police in the building. But I would assume this was a kid being stupid, not intending to do harm.

Kids bring plastic knives someone made a mistake.

As a teacher who has left MCPS I can say this is so common place, its not even chocking anymore. Its despicable. Principals are continuously sweeping things under the rug. If you are not in the school, you wont hear about it. They do a good job keeping things under wraps. I've seen teachers threatened with repercussions and retaliation for speaking out. One of the main reasons I left the county. It was impossible to change and if you try to speak up, you get slapped down. Good luck out there Teachers. Stay safe. and remember, your mental (and physical) health are just as important.

It was butcher knife. But nice try trying to defend a child wielding a weapon in an elementary school.

Part of the problem at the school is that the principal is not honest. It was not just a steak knife. It was a sharp, straight edge, knife. Another student’s life was threatened if he told. Fortunately, older kids saw the knife and told the teacher.

It also doesn’t help that parents seem to want to remain ignorant or logically explain situations away. This school has been managed poorly since the principal took over almost 3 years ago.

What grade was the student who brought the knife to school in? I am a parent in this school and while I do not agree with this assessment of the principal or the general management of the school, I would like to know more.

Today the SCES principal was appointed as the new principal of Briggs Chaney MS, so SCES will be getting a new principal this summer.
