BASIS burns through its WL mainly because it's not set up as a school as much as a test prep center. Many families EotP want a school offering not just strong test prep, but a well-rounded education and good facilities, even if their children could handle the BASIS curriculum easily enough. If you can't afford the latter within the District and don't want to move outside, you may go for the former. If you take a close look at the criteria US News and World Report uses to determine HS rankings, it's not difficult to see that their focus is narrow: they care almost entirely about scores on state standardized tests, SATs and APs, particularly for poor kids. BASIS only graduates about a dozen poor kids each spring (down from two dozen six or eight years ago). To be fair to the franchise, their tiny pool of graduating poor kids knocks it out of the park on tests, hence the #1 ranking in DC and Arizona. If USNWR ranked school facilities, leadership, offerings in the arts, academic rigor beyond the AP curriculum (e.g. Intl Baccalaureate Higher Level languages), sports and so on, BASIS wouldn't rank #1 in DC or elsewhere. https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/articles/how-us-news-calculated-the-rankings |
| yeah, fair assessment |
| +1. More than fair. |

Yes, BASIS has a narrowly defined target student. It’s not just students of a certain academic caliber. It’s also kids with specific goals and a family that likes and will buy into the BASIS approach. Some BASIS kids are very well rounded, but that usually means having activities an interests that don’t require school support but for which they get lots of family support.
Which is why a lot of families ultimately decide it’s not the right fit. The tricky thing is that if you don’t like your IB, your alternatives are also kind of narrowly focused. It’s not like ITS or CHMS are universally appealing. I do think Latin Cooper is filling this role this year— an alternative for kids who are pretty academic but where BASIS doesn’t feel right. Obviously the original Latin campus as well, but generally that’s harder to get a spot at than BASIS. |
Great news for BASIS DC, especially on top of its latest #1 ranking for public middle schools in DC and Blue Ribbon School accolades. The Basis haters on this forum must be gnashing their teeth in frustration.

| hardy is not actually revisionist history. fifteen years ago, the school was almost entirely oob/lottery students and not reflective of the surrounding neighborhood demographics. then that (gradually) changed. the hs/charter school situation on CH is different. |
Get a life. |
Lol |
Just a tourist, moved out of state last year after helping to build and grow one of the amazing EotP schools mentioned here. And Seriously, LOL. Just send YOUR kid to Eliot Hine. You all are so cute. |
You moved out of state yet are lecturing people where to send their kids in DC? |
Yes. I instruct you to put your kids at Eliot Hine. |

You moved out of state yet are lecturing people where to send their kids in DC? Yup. It's hilarious. People.loke you can't decide to nate me becadur I gentrfiied in 2000 or.i white flighted it is 2020. Wish you'd make uo.your mind. I'm only.yelling people to walk their talk, and when they find out it isn't that easy and DCPS really can't figure out how to reach your dyslexic kid how to read, you move to the mountains. I'm such an ass. I know. |
I'd say you're right re: who is the right fit for BASIS. If you are this type of kid and family, then BASIS is a great fit, because you're in a school with many families like yours. |
Hell will freeze over before the African Americans who run this city let SP out of the Deal-Wilson pyramid and make it effectively an all white / asian school. |
| I’ve lived in CH for 12 years. Now have my third kid in Tubman. It’s been really good to all of them and the school did a great job staying open all last year. We love that it’s a 5 minute walk there and back each day rather than a long commute (no au pair or nanny to help with that). But sure, if you can afford to move to Mount Pleasant why not 🤷♂️. Schooling is such a personal decision as to what’s right for your family and kids and there’s a lot of choice out there.. |
