| Shouldn't it be called a burn guard? Or just a swim shirt? Such an icky term! |
| They were originally designed to protect surfers from getting a rash when hitting the sand. Hence, "rash guard." |
| I think they started with body surfing and boogie boarding and were to protect the stomach from the boards and sand. |
| It's meant for surfers to prevent a rash from rubbing their skin on the board. They weren't created for toddlers or bored housewives who want to go bra-less/bikini-top-less (from the thread in beauty and fashion). |

You three PPs must be soul sisters.
I agree, the term "rash guard" does the same thing to my brain that nails on a chalkboard does to the hair in my arms. |
| Because that is what surfers called them. |
| I thought brits and aussies call sunburn a rash and the shirts prevent sunburns. I thought the term "rash guard" was a British term |
clearly you don't surf. |

Despite its name, this is not a rash guard as it wouldn't prevent a rash on her tummy when it rubs against a waxed surfboard. It is, however, a sexy rash guard and might be of interest to the mom from the thread in the beauty and fashion forum. |
Aussie here. No we don't call sunburn a rash. But I always thought the shirts were originally designed to stop jellyfish stings (which causes a rash and are pretty common in Australia). |
| I've seen them called sunshirts. That's what I'm promoting. Sunshirts! Sunshirts! |
That poor girl has scoliosis. |
| Scuba diver here. I thought it was called a rash guard because it prevents the rash you get if you accidentally rub against fire coral. |
| Nope. They were created by surfers for surfers. |

I thought it was to wear between your skin and your wetsuit to prevent rash that some people get from the material of the wetsuit.
A swim shirt, as I have seen them advertised, seems looser and more intended to wear as sun protection out of the water or perhaps for water sports like canoeing, rather than being in the water to swim or surf. |
