My first baby - a mini schnauzer - is seven years old now and needs dental work. Her breath could stop you dead and it's clear she has a lot of tartar build up (plaque, whatever).
We moved to NW DC last summer and so she hasn't seen a vet since her annual appointment last spring in PA. At that appt., the vet suggested she get a dental cleaning but told us to wait until we moved because it would be ridiculously expensive at that hospital (UPenn Vet Hospital/School). Can anyone recommend their vet for doggie dental work? Also, about what did it cost you for the cleaning (I have no idea what to expect)? We live in NW/DC. I am particularly interested in your experience with Friendship Animal Hospital but anything in the NW DC/Bethesda area would be great. I'd even consider driving out to VA or somewhere else for a great vet who is affordable. Thanks! |

We had our dog's teeth cleaned at Friendship about 2 years ago. Honestly, I wish we had done it sooner.
She too had horrible breath and we had been told for years to have them cleaned. It turns out that some of her teeth were rotted through and needed to be removed. I cannot imagine her pain at having those teeth in her mouth. I think it cost us around $800 for the cleaning, teeth extractions, etc. Obviously this could change up or down if your dog's teeth are in better shape. She was groggy for 12-24 hours and ate soft foods for a few days and then was better than ever. I cannot say enough good things about Friendship. They saved my dog's life this year (unrelated to teeth) and I trust them implicitly. The 24 hour staffing is a godsend when you need it - and if you have any questions after the dental procedure someone will be there in the middle of the night to help. |
| Dr. Euthanasia is fast and cheap. b/c srsly, there are people who can't even afford to get their kid's teeth cleaned, so... |

Wow - $800. That's more than I thought. Is this most people's experience?
Thanks for the suggestions, 12:40 and 12:23. They are much appreciated. -OP |
| yikes, this is motivating me to start brushing my dog's teeth |

I do know of an inexpensive vet in the Petworth area. It's not a pretty office, in fact, it's bad, however, he's a damn good vet. I have a yorkie and he cleaned and pulled 6 teeth in August-the bill was $85. We have health insurance for our girl, and I didn't bother submitting a claim. I had called around, and even the clinic we use a lot, Delray, quoted me over $400. My husband and I talked, decided who was making the trip to the district, and that was that. She came home with nice breath for our beach vacation! This is her 3rd teeth cleaning, by Doc, in her 7 years of life.
BTW-he's been actively involved in animal rescue for over 15 or 20 years. He can spay/nueter over a 100 cats in a one day, by himself. It's too bad his clientel during the week suck-but he's a good surgeon. I believe most vets overcharge and the pet industry is all about making $$$. My girl is a rescue, purebread yorkie, have had her since she was 14 weeks old, and we love her to pieces-I wouldn't take her to place where I thought she might be in danger. You have to close your eyes to the office, that's all.

Completely unnecessary comment. Quite a few of us view our dogs and cats as a part of our families. Make comments elsewhere. |

This poor child who died from lack of proper dental care should drive us all to support Universal Health care, including dental and neo-natal, for everyone under the age of 18. It should NOT be used as a rationale to kill a perfectly healthy pet who needs a teeth cleaning. You are a complete f*cking a$$hole to even suggest such a thing. Please, everyone else, excuse my language but good God... |
| Just a comment on pricing so OP would have more info regarding what is typical . . . we were just quoted around $250 for a cleaning at Hayfield Animal Hospital in Alexandria. And they are having a special in January and February on teeth cleaning that makes it even cheaper I believe. |
|
OP here...
Took the dog to Hayfield Animal Hospital yesterday. Total bill came to $800 with a 'discount.' The facilities are clean and nice, though. I can't help but wonder if I got a little fleeced on the bill (they removed a lot of her teeth, and I wonder if they didn't try too hard to save them), but what's done is done. If she's happy and healthy in a week, I'll probably decide it was all worth it. |

Ugh, dental work is expensive but if you can afford it, it is well worth it.
The asshat suggesting euthanasia should be ignored. Treating your beloved pet -who are members of our family- has nothing to do with that poor child's situation. As one other poster suggested, if you want to direct your ire somewhere I suggest supporting universal health care and shutting your damn mouth about people who can and choose to provide vet care to their animals. |

We have had both of our dogs' teeth cleaned in the last three months at Capitol Hill Vet Clinic on 8th St. SE. It was under $500 for each pet, and for one dog, that included bloodwork to make sure that he was healthy enough to survive the anesthesia.
We have been to Friendship (upon referral from our vet at Capitol Hill Vet Clinic) to diagnose one of our dog's life-threatening health issues, and credit them with saving his life. If Friendship is convenient to you and not cost-prohibitive, I highly recommend it. |
