I used to be a serious runner in my 20s and early 30s. I took 7 years off to have kids and have had a series of setbacks. It seems like I'm always injured and I'm beginning to think that the lackadaisical way I stretched (or not) and trained (or not) when I was young just won't work anymore. In the last 3 years, I've had plantar fasciitis, sprained an ankle, hurt my hips, and did something to my hamstrings. I need someone to lay out a stretching regimen and also a training plan so I don't get injured again. Any recommendations on online or live coaches?

Sorry no but I think the stretching is key - it is animal nature to stretch every time you get up from resting, when muscles are warm and before sudden movement.
You need to cut your running to 2 or 3 x a week and start to strength train and stretch. You will major improvements
Where do you live? You may want to try your local running store.
OP here. Thanks for the suggestions. After painful trail-and-error, I've come to the same conclusions but need someone to help me get a stretching and strength training regimen in place. I live in Chevy Chase, but the guy who owns the outlet of the Georgetown Running Store here is a complete butt when it comes to giving advice to anyone he doesn't consider a "serious" runner. I'll try Fleet Feet downtown maybe.
I don't know where you are located but there's a group headed up by an awesome woman, named Lisa Reichman(sp?) she's the owner of Run Farther and Faster, there is a FB page if you want to get in touch with them. I've never used this woman, I'm not a runner, but have heard great things about her and her organization. [urlhttps://www.facebook.com/RunFartherFaster[/url]
Hi, we run a community fitness group in Bethesda, to include coaching on distance running. If interested, email us at info@foundationalfitnessclub.com
Kathy Pugh.
I am a runner and I agree with the suggestion to check with your local running store. They probably know coaches. Some of them have running groups, too. Margie Shapiro is a coach and co-owner of PRR in Arlington. She is a really neat person and is a mom (and pro triathlete). If she is accepting new clients I would definitely hire her. She knows her stuff and is very friendly and down to earth.
I think a running club/group might be good for you - check out dcroadrunners.org or mcrrc.org.
Check out runnersconnect.net. There's a wealth of running information, and also various coaching options, though they would be remote.

Agree with Kathy Pugh. I don't know her personally but many of my running friends train with her and they all seem to love her. And they are all amazing runners now, but she works with beginners, too.
She's on the Hill, though; not sure whether she goes elsewhere. |
