Mentally ill family member who is unable to work

Anonymous
I have a mentally ill family member who is under treatment right now.
He is in a program that does treatment 3 times a week for 3 hours for each session.
He has a job but has been unable to work. Seeing as though the treatment only takes 9 hours a week, he can work schedule-wise but it seems that the mental illness has overcome him right now.
I'm trying to help him protect his employment.
What do I need to know?

I was looking at the Americans with Disabilities Act and it looks like mental illness is covered.
How do I get help navigating through legal issues? Would that be with a social worker?

thank you!

I had a coworker (teacher) who had severe depression. He used all of his sick leave, then FMLA. He had to file a treatment plan completed by his psychiatrist. He did return the next school year so it must have worked.

I have a cousin whose depression and other mental health issues mean he'll never really be able to work full time. Small projects here & there when he's having a good month, but nothing long term and certainly not the stress of full time work, having to interact with others and deal with their expectations.

He's on disability. Sounds like your relative would be eligible as well.
