Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
| We have been at KidzDocs for DS's whole first year. Out of 6 doctors, there is one we do not like and would only see if no one else was available and we couldn't wait and one other doc we don't care for much but the other four have been very good. We have had two not so great experiences with nurses but the majority of our experience with the nurses have also been very good. However, we are thinking of switching to Children's Medical Associates (CMA) in Alexandria primarily because they are 5 mins from our home and KidzDocs is about 25. Also, I see from their website that they have evening hours in the Fairfax office if needed and weekend hours too. For those who go to CMA in Alexandria can you please tell me why you do or do not like this practice and also, which doctors you prefer and why? Also, the names and bios of the docs are all on their website but they don't specify which ones work at which office. Thanks. |

| I brought my daughter there after MULTIPLE recs from local friends and neighbors! We now are with Kaiser so we don't go there now, but if our insurance changed we'd be back there. All the doctors were wonderful and the nurses were just as good. A good friend of mine LOVES Dr. Atiyah (sp?). For the 2 yrs we were with them, I just saw whichever Dr. was available. I always had a great experience. GOOD LUCK! |
| I have used Dr Atiyah for three years and have been happy with every visit. The office is clean and the whole support staff is friendly. Overall we are very pleased (but have nothing to compare it too as this was our only pediatrician experience) |
| If CMA is closer, I think this decision is a no-brainer. Go with them. We go to Kidz Docs and have mixed reviews. Absolutely love 3 doctors, okay re: the rest. The nurses though we've had problems with and the wait is ridiculous. But we live 1 mile away so we keep going there for the convenience. Also, I find Kidz Docs good in emergency situations. It is the well child visits that drive me crazy... |
Ditto - I would switch in a heartbeat if I lived closer to a different practice... |
| do you mind sharing, in your opinion, which docs are good and which should be avoided at KidzDocs? |
| I think it's a matter of personnal preference. FWIW, I prefer Drs. Thompson, Shen, and Russell. |

If you do a search here you'll see lots of raves about CMA. We went there until we moved out of the area when my son was about 18 months old and loved it--I wish we could find practices where we live now that are so helpful and friendly. We also loved Dr. Atiyeh and used him for our well-child appointments, but were also impressed by the other docs when we needed quick sick visits and the nurse practitioners and lactation consultants were great too. The call in hour in the morning is great and nurses ALWAYS answer the phone, which is wonderful when you're a new mom.
We also used the Alex. office, but on the weekends it wasn't a bad drive to drive to Fairfax when we needed to. |
| We used to go to Kidz Docs and we loved Dr. Shen. There was another dr there that we saw once during a sick visit that was sooo bad. I would avoid her at all costs. I'll see if I can find her name. She told me son who was 2 yrs old at the time and had a 104 fever to stop acting like a baby and drink the Motrin they gave him. Needless to say, her bedside manner left a lot to be desired. |
I'd bet good money that was Dr. Fleming. She is SOOO not my favorite. We are still with Kidz Docs only because it is so close to home. I like Dr. Russell and Thomson. I would never see Dr. Fleming again for any reason and I avoid Dr. Larkin but I know several parents who like her. |
| We use CMA and have been very happy. We primarily see Dr. Bergman for well visits but have seen several of the other doctors and nurse practitioners for sick visits and particularly liked Dr. Friehling as well. We've also unfortunately had to page the doctor on call late at night on several occassions due to very high fevers and we've always received friendly and consistent advice. |
Exact same three that I like. Thompson is the absolute best. Russell is pretty no-nonsense, but knows his stuff. |
YES! That was her. Ugh. It pains me to even think about how bad she was. |
| We went to two appointments at KidzDocs and then switched to CMA. In hindsight, I can't believe we even gave KidzDocs a second visit. The practices are like night and day. We now see Dr. Kishi at CMA and couldn't be happier with the professionalism we experience at CMA. The office at KidzDocs seems incredibly dirty. The waiting room is a nightmare - very small and generally crowded. At the first visit the nurse recorded my son's weight incorrectly - she was off by 5 ounces. Luckily my husband questioned the discrepancy between the weight recorded by the nurse and his weight at the hospital, he was weighed again and the error was corrected but it made us question the quality of care. And again, I couldn't get over how dirty and old the entire office felt. We did like Dr. Shen, but overall she wasn't enough to keep us there. This was my experience. |
