I know raw bar is a no no, and will stay away from high mercury fish, but what about cooked clams- steamers, fried clams, etc. and clam chowder. also, in D.C. I try not to eat prepared salads like tuna salad, chicken salad, etc., but what about lobster rolls (the lobster mayo salad stuff on there)? thanks. |
| Lobster rolls shouldn't be made with premade lobster salad. Clam chowder, clams, cooked oysters are all ok. I was in Maine at 8 weeks pregnant and even had a couple of raw oysters. It's whatever you're willing to risk. (Except for the mercury. That's just to be avoided pregnant or not in my books) |

| Lobster should be cooked fresh--I wouldn't eat a lobster roll made with premade lobster (and I prefer my roll with butter instead of mayo). But in general, cooked seafood and shellfish is fine. |

Dig in to steamed lobster, clams, cooked oysters, etc. Cooked and cooked fresh is so tasty - and healthy for you.
Stay away from premade lobster salads and coleslaws - actually would stay away from premade anything. Go for fresh and go for cooked. |
| OP here: the lobster salad is pre made in the sense that they make it that morning- the places we go have really fresh amazing famous lobster rolls. when you order, they scoop the lobster roll topping stuff onto the buttered hot dog bun. it's not like it sits around for days, but it's not like they mix the meat and the mayo right then and there |
I would eat that without giving it a second thought. Some people are more risk averse. You have to do what you are comfortable with. |

| I am normally very risk-averse when it comes to food, and obsessed about tons of things I ate during my pregnancy, but I would definitely eat the lobster salad you described (unless it was from a dinky hole in the wall kind of place, which it sounds like it won't be). I think the risk from the seafood/mayo would be salmonella anyway, not listeria - which of course you wouldn't want to get, but being pregnant doesn't increase your chance of contracting salmonella like it does listeria. |

You are at more risk of Salmonella during pregnancy too...the hormones tone down your immune system. This keeps the body from attacking the foreign material in your body..the fetus and placenta. Salmonella doesn't cause as much harm to the fetus as Listeria.
That being said I would eat that lobster roll in a hot second. |
if I make it myself, yes. I also eat runny eggs, dishes containing raw egg, and heated deli meat. Sometimes I don't even heat it. |
