I usually ovulate on day 15 or 16. We have been trying to have sex on either days 14, 15 and 16. But usually just end up doing it on 15 and 16 (other times of the month too, but just these days to maximize our chances). Somehow though, I feel like my timing is off. I know this is a silly question, but I am thinking this area might need to be tweaked. Someone on here mentioned they have sex 4 days straight before ovulation and one day after. Help please!
Also, I thought men needed a break between days to have better sperm quality. Is this still true? Background - We have one DD and I just stopped BF on Mother's Day. We have been seriously trying since March. |
| Sex on days 11, 13 and 15. |
| Thanks - OP here: Anyone know why it's better to have sex before and not on the the day(s) you ovulate? I am usually smarter about these things, but TTC makes me feel like a dummy. Sigh... |
| Agree with doing it a little earlier as well. The thing that worked for me was paying attention to the egg white cervical mucus (EWCM) . When it is clear and copious, go for it. |
| You do it before because it takes a while for the sperm to get up near where the egg releases. You want them there and waiting. |
+1 Also, how do you know you ovulate on those days? Are you using a kit or tracking by other methods? My OB is actually not a huge fan of the kits. She told me basically to have sex every other day within a certain period of time (starting even as early as day 10). She thinks the kits cause people to wait to long to have sex. |

Do it at every other day around your fertile window.
You can get an idea with the kits or tracking CM, but your OB's advice is sound. |
| You have sex before because the sperm lives inside for up to five days. So it's ready and waiting when that egg is released. |
| Try day 12, 14, 16 and you should be fine. You don't need to alternate, the only reason you would need to is if your DH has a problem. For normal healthy men it is okay to have sex every day if you want, but go at least every other day. I got pregnant a couple of months ago (miscarriage) having sex on the day the ovulation test strip said positive and no other days within a week either side (ugh don't ask, usually we are twice a weekers). It only takes one, good luck! |
| Definately earlier. I used the ovwatch when we were ttc, and that gives you the "go" signal about four days before ovulation. Got to give the guys time to get into position before ovulation. |
+1 You dontneed to do every other day unless your dh has issues. Every day around your ovulation time is fine. |
| Sex on days 12, 14, 15 |
| Or 13, 15, 16 |
| If you are ovulating on day 15, having sex on day 15 is really too late, usually. If no male factor problems, then every day is fine, but I would definitely start earlier. I'd suggest day 10, 12 and 14 at a minimum. |
| In years of trying, the months that led to successful pregnancies (2) were months in which we had sex for four to five days straight leading up to and including the two days of a positive ovulation test. We had been through fertility testing however and knew that my husband had ample and good quality sperm. The every other day thing just did not work for us. So you might mix it up from month to month and not just do the same thing every month. |
