| I don't know of any historical fiction ones, but two books I found very engrossing at that age were "The Twenty-one Balloons" and "The Westing Game". |

My 8 year old loves the bailey school kids series and captain underpants. For"nonfiction", he likes ripleys believe it or not and stories about Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster. Also loves the Calvin and Hobbs compendiums at the library.
We also let him stay up an extra 1/2 hour in bed if he wants to read. Or he can go straight to sleep. Reading and staying up later is more if a treat that way. Have him pick out his own books at the library, he is more spy to read them that way. |

| Look at the "interactive history adventure" series. They are choose-your-own-adventure books set in different historical periods, and many are war/battle based which my son loved at that age. Also he may like the Time Spies series, about siblings who time travel back into different historical periods (similar to Magic Treehouse). |

If you want historical fiction, try Otto of the Silver Hand. Medieval theme, great read for an 8 or 9 year old.
For a similar vibe though not strictly historical fiction, try: Island of the Blue Dolphins Ronia the Robber's Daughter For fantasy, try: The Hobbit (much easier read than the Lord of the Rings series) The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (Narnia series) Harry Potter series For random great books for that age, try: Tales of a Fourth-Grade Nothing (Judy Blume) My Side of the Mountain Little House in the Big Woods (Laura Ingalls Wilder) Farmer Boy (Laura Ingalls Wilder) |
| When one of my sons was that age, he liked the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series. |

does he like baseball? there are the ballpark mysteries. they are short like the A to Z mysteries. my son loved them, yet hated magic treehouse books.
if he is reluctant, try reading to him more, but a bit older theme books. have him go with you and pick them out at the store. |

Does it have to be in novel form? My 8 year old loves "It Can't Be True"--kind of like Ripley's Believe It or Not but more educational.
He also likes the "I Survived" series and the Interactive History series that PPs recommended. |
