Maleficent

Anyone taken their kids to see it? Too scary for a five year old girl?

Yes too scary, and I haven't even seen it. And yet I know it is too scary.

OP, besides asking here, a great website to check is commonsensemedia.org

I saw it today with my 8 year old son. There were VERY intense moments, mostly in the earlier parts of the movie (after the beginning though). I have a battle-lovin' kid and that's how I sold it to him, but it was too much for him at times. He had his shirt and hands over his face for quite a bit of the movie. That said, there aren't as many "scary" parts as I had thought there would be, but they are front loaded (I felt) and so he had his defense posture (hands and shirt over face) any time Maleficent or another certain character was on the screen afterwards, even if not scary or intense at all. Afterwards, he said he liked it and that it wasn't too scary. I would not have taken him at 6 and I don't know about 7.

Way to scary for a 5 year old girl. The 8 year old girl with us tonight left crying.

Take this at face value, but Angelina Jolie said her daughter ended up in the role of young Princess Aurora because all the other 4-5 year old girls who auditioned were too frightened to be next to her.

Saw the movie tonight, it was excellent - but I could see it be terrifying for my 4.5 year old. Not sure I would take a 5 year old, YMMV.

Saw it -- I think the minimum that can handle it is probably 11 or 12. It's pretty intense at parts. Kind of a schizophrenic mix of super intense and adult and slapsticky comedy in places. Very tonally hard to pin down, but not one for the young kiddos.

Uh.... not sure how common sense is supposed to substitute for having actually seen the movie.

LOL! I read that too. Honestly, why didn't they just say "We really felt like we needed at least one of our kids to prove they could act"

I took my 15 year old to see it, and I absolutely loved it. And I'm not a Jolie fan. With that said, there were numerous kids there under 9 years. They were also well-behaved but that may have been because they were either mesmerized or scared. We saw it in 3-D.

There are intense moments, though. I'm no critic but I think Johnny Depp would have made a better king. I've read differing critics opinions, thumbs up and down. What they forget is that it's a Disney movie and not a foreign film.

If your kids might get scared, I might forego the 3-D.

Not all the other 4-5 year-old girls, that daughter was the only one of HER kids to not be afraid of her.

unless you are a super uptight parent or have a very sensitive child, that site is useless. I would trust the judgement of someone on this board before Commonsense Media.
