MoCo schools -- ok to miss the friday after rosh hashanah?

Anonymous
Our school is closed Thurs 9/25 but not Fri 9/26. Would it generally be OK to keep DC home from school 9/26? DC is entering kindergarten this year, so I'm new to this. Thanks so much!

Of course.

Yes.

Many students and staff do.

If you miss that Friday, you can kiss Yale goodbye.

9/26 is the 2nd of Rosh Hashana. The schools are not closed for the holiday though. So many Jews will be out in observance of the second day. Your child will not be the only one absent.

Just be sure to write "religious observance" on the note so that your DD's absence is excused. The school won't necessarily assume that's why you are out. Even with a "Jewish last name".

what is an excused absence? I don't mean to sound stupid but I never send in notes when my kids have been out of school.

Excused Absences (from http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/parents/basics/schoolbasics/#4)

To be successful, students need to attend school regularly. Acceptable reasons for missing school include the following:

Illness of student (doctor's note may be required in case of extended absence)
Death in immediate family
Court summons
Religious holiday
State emergency
Permission from the principal (to visit a college campus, interview for a job, work under certain circumstances)
Lack of authorized transportation (the school bus does not come)
Family travel is normally not considered an excused absence, except in unusual circumstances and with approval from the principal.

Whenever your child is absent, you must send a note to the school within three days of your child's return. Otherwise, the absence will be considered unexcused. In middle and high school, attendance is taken in every class.

Absences are recorded on the report card in elementary, middle, and high school. School counselors and pupil personnel workers are available to assist families in situations where students are having difficulty with school attendance. Students are responsible for making up any work missed during an absence, regardless of the reason for the absence; talk with your child's teacher or guidance counselor if you have questions about making up missed work.

This is true. My kids are ALWAYS out on the second day of Rosh Hashana. Of course, we go to shul. I would not keep them out just to let them stay home and do nothing (I know some parents who do this FWIW). It has never been an issue for us with the school.

I give you permission to keep him home.

LOL! Unless DC writes about it compellingly in the personal essay.

I know, I have never written a note, brought in a doctors note or anything. It is public school. They don't care.

I think if your kids miss a lot of day (more than 6?) then it could become an issue if abbesses are not excused.
