So much embarrassment, anxiety over how her husband is reacting to her lies, her brand being upended, and is also taking care of five kids(granted with 5 nannies but still that’s a lot).

Well, the best way to avoid the pain of that humiliation is to not lie in the first place. What did she think would happen???

I feel bad for her for being mentally ill but at some point you are responsible for your actions even if you are sick.

I actually feel really bad for everyone else involved here- Alec, her parents, her poor kids, even those poor nannies.

This woman has hurt every single person who loves her in service of this ridiculous delusion. My mother is also mentally ill and she also did nothing but hurt other people her entire adult life. At some point you stop feeling sorry for these people and only feel for their hapless victims- their families.

How do you know she hurt anyone in the circle you describe? And maybe her delusion is a signal of issues that warrant compassion and empathy, not nastiness and witch hunts.

Don’t you think she has humiliated Alec and her parents? Don’t you think whatever is going on with her has harmed her ability to parent?

Maybe you have not dealt with a mentally ill person. They are not sweet little infants who do not know the difference between right and wrong.

Mentally ill people may or may not know the difference between right and wrong and there’s a complex spectrum of mental illness. At its worst, mental illness clouds judgments, skews perception of reality, and created literal delusions for the person suffering from the disease. Mentally ill people often create a narrative that is a result of skewed or delusional perceptions of reality. It’s tragic.

Sadly, a long history of mentally ill people in my family. Some of them did really awful things; not one of them was an awful person. They were sick. And they deserved compassion and support, not ridicule and mockery.

No kidding, but the punishment in this case is way out of proportion with the crime. I feel sorry for her and while she shouldn’t have lied, I wonder if she actually hurt anyone - or did this to hurt anyone. And in the scheme of things, there are so many awful humans in the world. Hilaria’s not one of them, regardless of her considerable flaws.

While this story is tantalizing, she’s being bullied and savagely ridiculed for no decent reason.

How exactly is she being punished??!?!? She's not being arrested or even lost any endorsements that I am aware of. If nothing else she's getting a ton more publicity! Stop acting like she's some sort of innocent victim. No one has ever died of humiliation.

Again, if she were not a slim, active, attractive, wealthy white American woman I wonder if people would be imploring others to have this same level of compassion.

You are talking about, and to, yourself....and it is pathetic. No one intelligent thinks Hilary has anything of value.

Personally I couldn’t care less about her flaunting her body. I mean, okay, it’s kind of weird, but I actually have done some of her bathroom yoga/stretching workouts and I liked them. I’m cool with the fact that her body is way better than mine.

Who cares about her body, I mean really. We’re not sex starved white guys looking for latina a$$. I couldn’t care less about her body, really. My body is pretty decent considering I am older than Hilaria, never work out, have two kids, and have a stressful career. I am happy with my body.

Do you not imagine people suffer terribly psychologically and emotionally from the nastiness of these witch hunts / cancel culture mobs? I’m not condoning HB’s lies, but her “crime” was very limited compared to the damage she’ll sustain. I hope she survives.

Oh god do you hear yourself???? If this is your idea of not surviving, then you need some actual real problems.

I dunno, I often see bullies defending their ways in this very manner. What gave her a right?

Who did HB bully? Who did she attack? Who did she proactively hurt? She lied and she’s been caught. She created a fake identity which suggests mental illness. [b]She deserves to be called our for the lies, but the rest of the viciousness and cannibalism on this thread and others is gratuitous and pretty horrifying.

Mental health professional here. I'm not sure everyone who creates a fake identity is necessarily mentally ill. I don't know a lot about this specific case, but if there is a big motive (fame and fortune, winning someone's affection, etc.), I think perfectly sane people can be motivated to exaggerate or lie, especially if they think risk of exposure is very low.

You’re in no position to diagnose her. Some people do suffer from delusions and mental health issues that cause them to create a persona that is not attached to reality. She could be a con artist, but in some level, what was underneath that? We have no idea and to immediately assume she was trying to hurt people, is complete speculation.

Anonymous wrote:That NYT article is

Totally. What a pack of lies. She’s on the record in April saying she moved from Spain at 19 to attend NYU. Why didn’t that come up in the interview? She just continues to look like a liar and the Times continues to be a sack of garbage.

From The NY Times article: "She doesn’t understand why anyone would think she has portrayed herself as anything other than who she is: someone steeped in two cultures. Evidently, she said, “people don’t have the attention span for that kind of thing.” "

So, it's our fault for finding out she lied about her entire life. She isn't just 'steeped in two cultures', she has portrayed herself as being someone with a birthright she does not have, with skin color that really isn't hers and an accent she fakes to sound like someone she is not.

They’re not seeing her as someone simply steeped in two cultures because when asked explicitly where she came ‘here’ from, she alluded to Spain! How weird that people are literally interpreting that as her saying she came from Spain. It’s a real head scratcher.

Really hoping this is just the NYT getting her on the record and they then follow up with another piece addressing exactly why this is wrong. If this is all they have to say on this it’s really disappointing.

I never heard from her until now, I didn’t know who she was, she wasn’t remotely relevant on Spain.
Things that I want to point out:
1) I don’t think she knows about our culture at all. Mallorca is a tourist place, where there are touristy places where no one is a local. There are many British and Germans who retire there and don’t know any word in Spanish after living in Spain for many years, they don’t tend to integrate or blend with the local community. What she talks about Spain are all stereotypes, I don’t follow her on social media, but has she talked about “Los Reyes Magos”? (The Three Wise Men), they give presents on January 6th (they’re our version of Santa Claus). If she names her children Spanish names (well, weird composed names not common here) you’d think she celebrates Spanish traditions as “Reyes Magos”, or the twelve grapes at New Years’ Eve (you eat 12 grapes on each clock bell strike at midnight).
2) Her brother wrote to her in Spanish being both Americans? Come on! And the Spanish was off, with common mistakes.
3) She never speaks more than two sentences in Spanish. Her accent is good, but her grammar and vocabulary is not, that’s why I think she avoided to talk with the Spanish press.
4) What I find most offensive of it all it’s not that she pretended to be Spanish, but that she portrayed an stereotype of “Latin” that has nothing to do with us. When I look at the way she makes up, for example, I think of a Latin girl, not a Spaniard from Spain. And I read some interviews full of stereotypes that are not even from our country. “Cielito lindo”! And she tanned and dyed her hair to look from Spain? Come on! That’s so offensive! Tell Elsa Pataky that she’s not Spanish because she’s blonde... argh.
5) No one in Spain is called Hilaria. It’s absurd.
6) A Spaniard wouldn’t give up her last name, it’s a cultural thing for us. We marry and keep our last name and we have two last names. Take Elsa Pataky, for example, she didn’t lost her last names when she married Chris Hemsworth. She’s Elsa (name) Lafuente (first surname, from her father) Medianu (second surname, from her mother). We don’t tend to have middle names (I don’t, for example, as most of my friends), so that’s even weirder that Hilaria names her children even three.

Great informative post, but I'm distracted by the bolded--so is everyone's mouth just stuffed with grapes? Because you can't eat them that fast, lol.

You can eat them all, believe me, we are trained since babies xD If you don't you get bad luck for the next year haha

I think people at this stage are just very curious about what Alec knew when. Was he conned (and if yes, did he figure it out only after DCs) or was he in on it from the beginning? Who else knew - PR, CAA, etc

Do you hear yourself? People of all socioeconomic backgrounds suffer terribly. Just because people have a house or a car or “things” doesn’t mean they aren’t vulnerable to suffering. What a horribly simple and materialistic view you have of “problems”.

Nope. There are older women with kids and better bodies (Cindy Crawford, Elle Macpherson, Angelina Jolie, JLo, Halle Berry etc.) Lauryn Hill has 7 kids, is 45 y/o and looks amazing - I don't see anyone picking on her, right?

What punishment? Is she losing her home? Her children? Her materials goods? No. She will be fine.

The pile on will reach to an inflection point and she will start garnering sympathy. Pretending to be of a different background is tacky and some specific groups may or may not feel aggrieved by it but I don't think most people are losing sleep over this. I'm an immigrant POC of color with an accent that I've never felt the need to try to lose. I find what she did comical but I don't feel harmed by it. I also think it's unlikely her husband doesn't know her true background so I doubt he has been duped for the duration of the marriage.

I could care less about her body her how many kids she has. I am pissed that she blatantly lied.

Alternative facts are not a thing Kellyanne.

+1 Her body is nothing special. She’s fit, same as many women her age and way older. She should be fit. What else does she have to do?

The only thing she has lost is the fake backstory that she herself created.

I'm surprised Nivea hasn't sponsored a post. "Maintaining a fake history is hard. But you know what doesn't have to be hard? Your feet with new Nivea Foot Cream!"
