if you just want to demonstrate academic ability

But your school recommends only a few people a year for AP is SAT subject test a good analog or are there alternate testing centers for AP? If you self study for it should you designate yourself as homeschooled?

So the school doesn't let people sit for an AP test if they want to? Even the private schools here seem to allow that. Call the College Board and see what they suggest.

No, you aren't homeschooled if you self study. You get the score you get - if you want college credit that's what they will look at.

Plenty of kids take AP tests without having taken the corresponding AP class. But your kid will really have to want it, because s/he will have to do a lot of studying,

The SAT subject tests are pretty limited in the subjects top you can test for. English, PreCalc and languages seem to be the main SAT II tests, although there are a few others I'm forgetting. SAT Math II isn't the analogue of AP Calc AB/BC, although depending on the intended major it might serve as a good measure of ability.

SAT II also offers tests in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math 1, Math 2, English, US History. Anyone can take these tests.
