hardiplank -- is it worth it?

We're substantially renovating our home and need to decide about new siding. Hardiplank is much more expensive. Is it worth the extra cost? What are the differences (asthetic, construction, or otherwise) between hardiplank and vinyl siding?

Stick with vinyl. Handiplank is still pretty much a unknown in terms of long term value. It's known how to handle and care for vinyl. Not worth the money.

It is far superior to vinyl which is why it costs a lot more. More stability and a much more authentic look. Should be roughly 2.5 to 3X the cost.

That said, you do need to get it installed properly, make sure it is caulked, and make sure that you allow it to weep at the bottom so that water doesn't get trapped behind it (this is all part of the manufacturer's instructions, just need to follow those). If you are a green person, it is a significant improvement over vinyl. Would also recommend the prepainted material if you can select one of those colors. Nothing beats a factory paint finish - you can't replicate that in the field.

Up to you to decide if you get that value back. We just built a house with Hardie on it and haven't regretted it for a second.

Vinyl will need to be replaced, sure. But not for quite a while. Spend money on something else.

Fiber cement siding has been on the market for over 25 years. It has a better r value than vinyl (which has none), it withstands weather and fire better than vinyl, and except painting every decade or so depending on conditions is pretty much maintenance free. It is more expensive, but it is a much better material.

My mother had hardiplank installed about 7 years a go and now has to paint it. We have a brick front with vinyl siding on the sides and front and look forward to zero to minor maintenance. Yes I know its a mcmansion or whatever but as a very technical person I was excited to have low maintenance including vinyl coated wood trim exteriors and vinyl windows. This is after living in a 50s rambler that required painting the siding every 4 years.

I like bricks and stone. But if I ever have to deviate from these two materials, I'll choose hardiplank. I can't stand vinyl, esp the noise it makes in big wind.

me too. And I'm not crazy picky (would buy a house without central air, for example)
