My almost 4 year old son recently started peeing very frequently. This has been going on for about two weeks. He does not wet the bed, but sometimes has to pee every 10 to 15 minutes. Sometimes he pees a lot, sometimes very little. He does not have a fever or complain of any pain, so I do not think that it is a UTI, though we will need to confirm with a doctor. He eats a healthy diet and diabetes does not run on either side of the family. Has anyone else experienced this with a child and can share advice?
We went through this with our three year old. It lasted a couple weeks and then went away. The ped wasn't concerned unless he had a fever. You might want to search for old threads on this. I found a couple when we were going through it and from people's responses, it seems to be pretty common.
This happens to my 6 yo occasionally - we finally figured out that when it happens he is constipated and I guess there's not as much space for his bladder.
Check him for diabetes, even if there is no family history
My DS does this sometimes. I often think maybe if he is going too much tgw urethra gets irritated and then he feels like he has to go again. Try a little ground flax seed (totally safe and no side effects) and see if pooping a little more helps and get a special water bottle for school and remind him to drink a bunch of water.
My DD did this during some anxiety-producing life events, even though she appeared fine (emotionally) on the outside. (Beginning kindergarten which coincided with losing our beloved nanny, and when DH started a job in a new city).
21:31 here- meant to add that our ped said that anxiety was sometimes the cause and not to make a big deal about it. Lasted a couple weeks.
My first thought is diabetes. Is he very thirsty too?

OP, it's called pollakiuria. My DS had this a couple of years ago. I found this blog to be really helpful at the time:

Thank you for all the responses! He is not overly thirsty and poops like a champ. It sounds like pollakiuria. If it does not resolve in a week or two on its own, we will make an appointment with the ped to test for diabetes.

I would still get him tested for diabetes just to rule it out.
It couldn't hurt to get his blood sugar tested. It would most definitely give you all piece of mind. |
