Lots of the southern state schools offer full rides to NMSF and above.

A lot of schools, especially those trying to improve their reputation and/or US news ranking, or trying to go from a regional school to a national school will give huge amounts of merit aid to people who have GPAs and/or test scores that are way above their median. Look at mid tier liberal arts schools or non-flagship state colleges.

IF you kid is a NMSF will get all sorts of stuff in the mail, basically offering free tuition for some state schools (often the second campus of a state school, or sometimes a state school that is the primary campus but not academic powerhouse, i.e. U Oklahoma, Southern Georgia etc). My DD also got offered a lot of merit aid by places like Oberlin. The Ivys and top SLACs (Amherst, Middlebury, Pomona and the like) don't give merit aid

Boy Scouts of America has a number of excellent scholarships, usually for those who made it through Eagle (2%).

College Confidential has a really good compilation of schools with merit aid. I'd have to dig a bit to find it but you should be able to search their website for it.

U South Carolina and U Delaware give decent merit$$.

Look at schools like UNC, Duke, Vanderbilt, Tulane, SMU, U od Alabama. If you go to the College Confidential website there's a list of the schools offering good merit aid to National Merit Finalists.

The above chart for Miami of Ohio is a good illustration of the Merit Aid range offered at similar ranked schools. Note, in all cases, a high unweighted gpa is required. Actual results will be hit & miss. It is nothing anyone can count on - apply widely if merit aid is necessary. But these figures look about right from our experience.

The key is having a test score that will improve a school's ranking. GPA is important, but it is meaningless as a comparison tool because grades aren't standardized.

Actually, those are few are far between considering the number of students that get Eagle Scouts. Plus, they are usually for small amounts.

Have an SAT verbal/or math subscore of 700+ and hope for merit aid at schools ranked below the top 50. Our preference was National Universities ranked by US News.
