Swimming on Vacation

Anonymous
Hi. I am a first time mom taking my almost 10 month old baby on his first vacation. We also planned to take baby swimming for the first time. I got the disposable swimming diapers and a pair of swim trunks. I was told that babies were allowed in the pool. However, it is a fancy resort with a fancy indoor chorine free pool. Is it a bad idea to take baby swimming there? I would be mortified if we had an incident. The pool is not the main part of the trip so we could go either way on this. Thoughts?

Just aim to go shortly after a diaper change and you should be fine....

Well, whether in a chlorinated or non-chlorinated pool, if he does have a poop accident, the pool will be closed. Also, you should get some sort of rubber pants to go over the swim diapers if you decide to do it.

OP here. I always see babies in the pool. Do people just cross their fingers and hope for the best? Is it really bad form to bring a baby to a pool? I am telling you- this is totally nothing I ever even thought about before I had a baby.

It's fine to take babies in pools. The point of a swim diaper is to keep poop in but let water (& pee) flow through. I agree about adding a rubber cover to be extra safe.

People take their babies in the pool all the time. Babies have accidents all the time. Pools shut down to clean them. I am not familiar with the type of pool you are going to. The typical way of cleaning a pool is to chlorine shock it. No one can swim for however long that takes - usually hours. People get mad at the people whose baby had the accident. It's the way it goes with pools. I am one of the luck ones whose kids never had an accident. If you are going to take your baby I would use more than a swim diaper and I would make sure that whatever cover I was using fit really well.

Swim teacher here, here's my advice: put a reusable rubber swim diaper over the disposable and you'll be fine. Like this: http://www.amazon.com/play-iplay-Swim-Diaper-PARENT/dp/B0027P8LSY

I have babies in the pool for 30 minutes classes all the time, and haven't had an accident in a year since we implemented a double-diaper policy.

Do not ever use normal disposable diapers in the pool. they expand and can 'explode', releasing thousands of little gel absorb balls into the water or all over the deck. Additionally they weigh a ton as they absorb pounds of water. every aquatic I have ever worked at has had a ban on disposable diapers in the pool. Use a swim diaper and a plastic cover.

Just take the baby in the pool the very last day you're there so if he poops in it, you're leaving and won't have to deal with it very long.

You really think the swim teacher didn't know this?? Obviously she meant the disposable swim diaper under the reusable swim diaper. Idiot.

Yeah, I was referring to the disposable swim diaper the OP mentioned, no way would I suggest a regular disposable diaper. Not my first rodeo.

OP here. Thanks for all of the advice. I picked up an iplay swim diaper at Target yesterday for extra support. We'll see what happens.
