I need to fly into Boston and then get to Salem that night for a service and then come back to Boston. How do you get there and how far is it away? Would we need to rent a car or is there an inexpensive train to take and then we could cab to our location? Also-any decent hotels up there that are not a fortune-I can't seem to find one!
I'm confused are you wanting to stay over in Boston or in Salem?
Sorry! If Salem is close to Boston then we are flying into Boston-getting to Salem for an evening event and then getting back to Boston to fly out the next day. (Or is there an airport there-I had no idea how far one was away from the other)
Salem doesn't have an airport-- it's maybe a 1/2 hour north (or northwest) of Boston. If you wanted to fly Southwest, I think Manchester, NH is about an hour or so from Salem.
ok--do you think it would make more sense to rent a car then or take a train? (It will be 2 or 3 of us if we bring DC)
I meant if we flew into Boston which we would need to do
I went to Salem last year for my cousin's wedding. We flew to Boston and rented a car to drive about 1/2 hr to Salem. It was pretty straightforward. I don't think there was a train option, although we didn't really look into that because we wanted to be able to drive ourselves around to various events anyway. We stayed at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, where the wedding was held. It was lovely and not too expensive for a major metro area- maybe $125/night? I can't remember exactly, but if you're literally just looking to sleep somewhere for a couple of hours then maybe you could look for a Days Inn near the airport or something.
ok thanks so much for that recommendation--if we stay in Salem I guess we just leave early to head to the airport the next day-I'll check out that hotel definitely.

There is a commuter rail that can take you to Salem. Not sure if it will have trains at the right times but it's cheaper than renting a car.

I would tend to rent a car-- you can probably get one for $25 for a day and it gives you a lot more flexibility.
