Any ball park figures on how much is would cost to have a catering company to do a bar and some passed hors d'ouvers?

Around 2k

$2k sounds about right. That's about what I paid with Windows Catering for a similar party. That included linen and glass rentals and delivery and pick up plus a chef and one server. If I did it again, I'd get a dedicated bartender.

$40/ person sounds pretty high for just hor doevres and drinks.

I was also thinking $2K but then thought that might be too low. We hired a bartender and help and did our own food and alcohol. I think it was less expensive.

Wow. OK- we'll get a bar tender and some servers and do it ourselves. $2K blows the budget.

I would consider getting prices at a local supermarket, e.g., Giant for pre-made platters--fruit, mini sandwiches, etc. It will probably work out cheaper than a cater.

Pick a theme for the food and alcohol and stick to it. This will help you keep costs down. We did a Mexican theme for a friend's going away party: mini tacos al pastor, cheese-stuffed zucchini blossoms, margaritas, tequila shots, and mexican beers, etc..
