Does anyone here do CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)??

Anonymous
I'm very much interested in joining a CSA, preferably organic. Does anyone have tips/suggestions. What farm do you recommend?

Thanks!

I was looking at www.localharvest.org but there are sooo many farms and choices, I'm not sure who's the best!

I just posted under the milk delivery question that I just recently started getting orders delivered from Green grocers. They have the choice of organic or "mixed".

Washington Greengrocer does deliver, but not much of the stuff is local and I haven't been that happy with the quality of the produce (but I'm picky about that). If you're trying to eat locally, a CSA is a better choice. I've used CSAs and have been happy with them. What area are you in?

OP here - I'm in NW DC. I see that most do truck deliveries in multiple locations. Thanks for any recs!

We belong to a CSA a love it. We've been doing it for a few years now. I love all the fresh produce. I have learned to cook vegetables that I would not have thought of buying otherwise, and have ended up finding recipes that my family loves. When looking for a CSA, I looked at what produce they provided the previous year -- I wanted a wide variety of vegetables AND fruit. Some CSA's also have meat and eggs. How long is their season? Do they deliver? I'm lucky that I found one that delivers to my doorstep. I live in VA and my CSA does not deliver to DC, so I cannot help you with the name of a specific CSA. Many CSA's follow organic growing practices but are not certified organic. For me the growing practices were more important that the certification.

I was in a CSA and found the food good, but the cooperation with other families a challenge.

To the PP in Virginia: What is the name of the CSA you use? Sounds ideal. Thanks.

I am the earlier poster giveing the greengrocers link. I have only received a few boxes so far so can't say I feel great or not about them yet. I do agree with the PPs statement that not all local and some produce not so great. Like the apples I received yesterday were fairly bruised which I wasn't thrilled with. Cost wise though I am not unhappy for what I am getting. I am going on ML any day now and thought it would be nice to get the deliveries for at least my time at home.

For those using CSAs in the district do you mind listing them? I am on the Hill if that makes a difference.

Thanks

I'm a Maryland mom, also interested in CSA options (ex-user of GreenGrocers for the same reasons others have cited -- non-local, mediocre quality). I am interested in either delivery or very easy pick-up options.

I'm a VA person (Old Town/Del Ray) who would also be interested in specific names that others have had good experience with.

16:26 poster here. I've heard good things about a CSA called Jug Bay Farm, which has a pickup point on the Hill for those of you who are close by. To the OP in NW DC, I hear great things about Star Hollow Farm in PA (http://www.starhollowfarm.com/index.htm). They have pickup spots at the Adams Morgan farmers market and in Tenleytown. I haven't used them myself but they come well recommended.

Great Country Farms delivers to NOVA and my friends have been very happy with the produce.

Hi, I belong to Spiritual Food of the New Millenium and love it. They have pick-up points in Bethesda, Arlington and Capitol Hill, and they deliver as well for a $10 weekly fee. They offer biodynamic food, which is a unique attribute. Strictly veggie though - no meat - although you will get eggs and cheese on occasion. I've blogged about both the biodynamic food (what's behind it) and what I like about the CSA at organicmania.com If you're interested in more detail than this summary, you might want to check out this post:

I'm going to be joining a CSA for the first time this year- I'm going with Potomac Vegetable Farm. They have lots of drop sites in VA. I sampled a lot of their stuff last year from the Farmers Market and loved it!

I'm the VA poster. We use Great Country Farm. I'm happy with it, although it is getting pretty pricey. They deliver to your door which is VERY nice.
