New Lawn - Sod or Seed

Anonymous
Our current lawn is just so sad, patchy, and weedy. We will have to re-do. We know little and are looking for low maintenance grass that doesn't require a lot of water. Any one with any advice on how to proceed? TIA!

Both. Do you have an irrigation system?

You really should wait until fall to seed. You can do sod now. But much more expensive

You need to ensure that sod gets warer regularly until it establishes its root system. (It has no deep roots at first.) I've seen many examples of people's sod dying, because of a lack of water.

Thanks all. It sounds like seed would be better for us, both for cost and water use purposes. Very helpful!

We put sod in our old house, and it turned out to be so affordable I wished we'd done it sooner. What helped:

Our front yard was pretty small, so we didn't need to cover a large surface.

We did it ourselves, including prepping the soil-- lots of tilling and soil amendments-- and we also went to a sod farm and picked it up ourselves. Can't remember the name of the place, but it was about halfway between DC and Annapolis, as I recall. That saved a lot of money, even after factoring the cost of renting a UHaul van to transport it.

to renovate a lawn it is a lot more work than jsut puting sod or seed down, you need to take up the existing yard and take out a few inches of soil and replace and then seed or sod

10:38. Yes, it is very laborious. Way too much work to waste your efforts by scrimping on properly prepping the soil.
