any lawyers who know this answer?

A teacher at my DCPS got upset with her class, and locked a class of 23 kids out of the building today (yes- today when it was the coldest its been in 5 years). The school had no recess at all today--it was that cold.
Is there anyone who is a lawyer who knows the legal ramifications and the union ramifications of this?
Thank you in advance.

What school?

"Reckless endangerment of a minor comes to mind.

How long were they out there? With or without coats?

Irrespective of criminal charges, I can't think of any circumstances where the teacher would be justified in locking her students out of class for disciplinary reasons. I'd be sure Rhee's office is notified ASAP--a teacher with such an erratic temperment is probably in the wrong field or something is going on with her personally that is preventing her from behaving appropriately at work.

Outrageous.

yeah, sounds like child abuse, tho I'm not a lawyer

Full story, please: it's possible to selectively edit anything to make the innocent look guilty and vice versa.

(Remember the Duke Lacrosse non-"rape" case?)

UPDATE I am the OP- Michelle Rhee's office is looking into this.
My original question was just trying to figure out what can be done, within the union rules. At some point the teachers union has to stop backing a teacher who is actually abusive, and I was wondering if any legal parents out there know when that point is.

From a criminal perspective, it is arguably an assault.

The point at which children pay union dues.

I wish they would lock them outside--the teachers are wimps about the cold--anything below 29F and it's indoor recess. If this were Minnesota, what, they'd be inside the whole winter. Janney principal: drop the cut off to 18F--kids w/hats and mittens will be FINE!

PP- you are a whack!
I am the OP and it was ten degrees on friday. The 9 year old kids were sent outside and the ones that were trying to grab coats were told "don't you take your coat". They were literally locked out of the trailer that the teacher was inside for 10 minutes.
I am all for outdoor recess- but that is not the issue here AT ALL!
