Shorts! What's in style?

Anonymous
I have about 2 pairs of shorts that I like and they're both a few years old. Time to shop (online hopefully). I like shorter shorts (not Daisy Dukes, just not the ones that hit the knee and look good on very few).
At the same time, 40 is just around the corner. What style of short is in this year?

Thanks for any ideas (and links !

I buy all my shorts from whbm. I think they are 4 or 6 inches. I am 42 and they cover what needs to be covered.

Old Navy currently has a five inch length that I like.

That said, printed shorts are trendy. I recently purchased two floral pairs and a polka dot pair.

Agree with this. I bought 5 inch shorts from JCrew. If I was in the market for more shorts, I'd go with printed. They are are really cute.

I look so bad in shorts. Always have. Nothing more to contribute than that. Last year, I bought a pair of loose silver ones from Rack that I thought might be fun, and when I put them on the other day my husband said I looked like a mix of a stripper and a boxer. Not in a good way.

I wish I could wear shorts
I have HORRIBLE veins - I've had surgery twice (the first when I was only 27...) but varicose veins run in my family. I'm not overweight, 5-9 and I wear a size 10 but since I carry every extra ounce in my thighs and I have varicose veins behind my knees and my calves, I feel like I look horrible in shorts.

Sorry, I realize I'm not posting a solution for OP, just venting about another summer in pants

This made me laugh! Totally something my DH would say; thorough I probably wouldn't have taken it on the chin so well!

Shorts are overrated and look good on very few people. Try stretchy skirts instead. Or summery dresses. If you must do a short, try the classic ones at J Crew. They come in different lengths so you can see what fits best. Also, I've noticed that shorts are nearly as badly vanity sized as other items of clothing. Especially because most shorts look better a little lower on the hip and a little looser in the leg. Try sizing one or two sizes up in the J Crew shorts and get a cute skinny belt to round out the look.

I just read in a magazine this morning that the current trend is a denim cut-off, the length you described. A little shredding w/sand paper to give it that worn out look is always nice.

I think anything longer than 6 inches looks bad on me. A 4 or 5 inch short is the best. I used to think that bermuda covered more and was a better look, but even now as a 2 or 4, I can see that they just made my legs look like sausages.

Anyone over 25 wearing this looks stupid.

Yeah, I think if you're above 30-35, denim cut-offs are a no-no.

I like boyfriend style shorts. They are slouchy like boyfriend jeans, usually they are almost knee length but you suppose to fold them, I fold mine to around mid thigh.
