Is 6 mo too young for a lovey?

Anonymous
It's been kinda tough to put our 6 mo DS down for bed lately - lots of wake ups and crying during the first hour or so. We don't do CIO so I tried giving him a lovey (small, light Angel Dear blankey thing) the last three nights and he totally soothed himself to sleep each time. I am thrilled but am also a little worried about the SIDS risk, so we've taken it out of his crib before we go to sleep.

At what age do folks usually consider it ok to introduce a lovey?

He's big - 90th % for length and 97th for weight - and has pretty good control over gross motor skills - rolling everywhere, scooching on belly, rocking on all fours, sits largely unsupported.

Should I worry?

We just started giving my 4.5 mo old a lovey at night. It is the only way she can self soothe back to sleep when she wakes up. Do I worry? Yes, but I tell myself that she's got fantastic neck control. Also, whenever I go in to check on her, she has it away from her face in her hand. SHe just pulls it up and rubs it on her cheek when she's falling or putting herself back to sleep

We do the same with our 5 month old who is in the 95th percentile for height and weight. I felt fine about it until his daycare provider said he sleeps with the lovey pressed to his face. I removed it from the crib last night and he had a terrible night of sleep. My husband thinks I am being paranoid and that we should keep the lovey, but I don't want to take the risk. I read up on this and in 'what to expect the first year', they said not to introduce them until 1 year.
