What do I do with this? She's a dependent of ours and our HHI is $240 (give or take) - does this mean she pays taxes at our rate or does she file her own return? I don't think the latter since she is a dependent right?
She's 16 and its 1300 of income. |
| I filed my own return from when I began working at 16. |

OP here - I wonder if I did too...can't recall.
I work in finance so I should be able to figure this out, but I don't think turbo tax has a question for does your child work.. |
They do their own taxes. They can still be a dependent on yours. |
| I think I filed my own return as well at that age. |
Correct. They will have to answer the question "Does anyone else claim you as a dependent?" with "Yes" Otherwise, they file their own taxes and you file yours claiming her as your dependent. |

You can look at this thread http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/379608.page#5045565 or poke around the IRS website.
Basically if that is all her income, then the only reason to file a tax return is if they withheld income taxes from her. |
| Thanks PPs! I will show her how to do her own tax return on TT, then she can get her tax refunded to her. Will be good practice for when she is an adult. |
